Interview with Michael S. DuBois

Describe your desk
I have 2 desk, one in the basement, and the other in the back of the house with many windows. Sometimes i need to be able to look outside and relax, other times i need to be able to focus exclusively on what im doing
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I lived until I was 12 in Illinois, and spent my summers on my uncles farm, running wild with my cousins in the fields and woods. Then we moved to a suburb of Detroit where i discovered the joys of a big city. I realize that those 2 experiences created the person I've become.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I started collecting Roman coins very early and from there my interest in that history grew and grew. But as I grew older and began to read the works of archaeologist and various historians and novelist I realized there was considerable disorder between all of them. Some use Roman names for towns, some only modern, some both. Some of them seemed to be confused with the units, the difference in names from one generation of soldiers to the next causing the historians to see them as different units. The one that sticks most clearly in my mind is the author who described a unit in the middle east as acquiring supplies along the western Rhine, not realizing that they were in fact 2 regiments with the same name. So I began collecting all the information available and organizing it to what I thought would be easier to understand. I innocently believed this would be accomplished in only a few months. Then a few years. It took 15.
What are you working on next?
At the same time I was accumulated information about the Auxillae, I couldn't help but work on the legions too. As the one work grew, so did the other, and now it also is nearing completion. Legio will also be in 2 volumes, and will encompass all the known legions from Caesar to Theodosius.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Professionally I'm a Pastry Chef, so I don't have that much spare time.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read Sci Fi.
When did you first start writing?
The first serious writing I did was for the newsletter of a Civil War group I belonged to. I started to give history lessons to the readers to help them understand the era we were working in.
