Interview with Paul Matthews

Who are your favorite authors?
Stephen King, J.K. Rowling, James Patterson, Robert Jordan, and Brandon Sanderson.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing about six years ago. I got a late start, because I had always been too timid to actually put pen to paper (or finger to keyboard I should say). Now I wish I had started sooner. I began by writing fanfiction and now I have written my first novel.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It's an idea I've had for a couple of years. Originally it was going to be set in a more medieval setting, but I decided it would fit better in a modern one. I had always wanted to write a fantasy series, so I came up with an idea and rolled with it. I plan for it to be a trilogy when it is finished, but I am open to making it longer.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I like to be in control of all aspects of the book. I made the cover myself as well as doing the editing and formatting myself. Being an indie author gave me the freedom to do those things.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy is getting to share the stories in my mind with others and hear their reactions and opinions.
What do your fans mean to you?
They mean everything. I love hearing feedback on my stories and I love hearing the different reactions to the story.
What are you working on next?
I will be working on book two of the series soon.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend my time with my friends. I enjoy music, movies, TV, and online gaming.
What is your writing process?
I usually come up with an idea, build characters, write an outline, and then start writing with the first chapter. I'm very structured in my writing. I have to write the chapters in order.
How do you approach cover design?
I want something that will catch people's attention and make them wonder what it means. I like a cover that's interesting, but not too busy. It should convey a bit of mystery, while also setting a tone for the story.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read a little bit of everything. I like mysteries, horror, crime novels, and even a little romance.
