Interview with Paul WADE

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the Norfolk countryside of the UK. It is a very quiet county, so when playing as a child a great deal of imagination and fantasy helped to pass the time more enjoyably. As I grew older those same imaginary games became stories, and poems if I was feeling sad.
When did you first start writing?
At 14 years old I wrote essays. By the age of 16 years I was contributing to a small magazine.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Anybody who has experienced helplessness, or conflicts with-in themselves often wishes they could escape the hardships, or pressures of day to day life. My character finds he is in an intolerable situation and decides to not simply escape, but build his own world using only his mind. He achieves this to such an extend that he actually ends up living in the world, of his creation. Sadly, the real and the imaginary worlds are not that different and my character finds himself battling to remain free in either world safely.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
As I finally have the opportunity to write full time, not as a career so much as a fulfillment of a passion, I felt that to spend a small fortune to publish my work was a contradictory plan. When I learned that publishing need not be either expensive or difficult to achieve, I was convinced indie was the way forward.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is the proof of my earlier statement. It is straight forward and costs nothing. The huge advantage being that many retail stores work with Smashwords, so a greater exposure for even a new author is increased and supported.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Certainly one of the greatest joys that I get is to have imagined and then created in words a place for my readers to visit while they read my stories. It would be even more joyful if they remember that journey long beyond the read...
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything!!! Otherwise, I could simply keep a journal...
What are you working on next?
The second volume of The Chronicles of Gordon Sykes. He is far from finished with his adventures and is learning to create even more complicated worlds.
Who are your favorite authors?
Oh dear. I would have to say Tad Williams, Bernard Cornwell, Robin Hobb, Kafka, Tolkien, These writers have helped me through some very difficult times.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
To live life; to capture and learn enough that I can bend reality into anything I can imagine.. Then write into a story..
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Thinking about what I may write next...
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Either by recommendation, or I plow through online libraries.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Actually yes. It was an essay I wrote when I was still at school. It was about a boy who left his home and lived in the countryside. He would eat whatever he could hunt, catch, or kill. His home was in the roots of a huge fallen tree. The roots formed a cave covered with moss and grass.
What is your writing process?
Idea, research, notes, plan, write..
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
To be honest, no I dont. Possibly Lady Chatterley's Lover, simply because it was banned...
How do you approach cover design?
This is an important issue for me, I believe subtle is way better than trying to describe the entire book in pictures on the cover.
