How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has contributed to my success through its expanded directory. Being picked up on Barnes and Noble's website through smashword has been one of my biggest successes, and one of my leading sellers.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing is my coping mechanism. Life can be hard, and imagination can be an escape. It can be a productive escape that brings hours of entertainment from thinking of it, to writing, to reading. Sometimes when life is too much having a safe escape is all that is needed.
What are you working on next?
I am eagerly working to finishing my third book. It is close to being complete. Outside of this I am contemplating a separate series that is coming together and what my fourth book will be.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I work full time, and care for a disabled child. These things take a lot of time and effort. Which is why sometimes I need to escape to my imagination.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Word of mouth is a popular way to discover new books. I love to attend conventions focused on fiction and literacy, so that is a great way to find new books.
What is your writing process?
I am what is often refereed to as a Pantser. I fly by the seat of my pants, never knowing where my fingers take me. It is a great adventure that surprises even me sometimes. I then go back and in the editing process make it more coherent.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first book that I remember reading, which had a big impact upon me was Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey. I was already writing at that point, but I think it was the first time there was a bug in my ear that I could one day publish. at that time the only way to publish was through a publisher and I didn't beleive it was possible as a young female writer without connections to get through the slush pile. That didn't stop me from writing, if she could do it, i could one day too.
What do you read for pleasure?
I enjoy a wide variety of literature for pleasure. I enjoy reading on the leading science break through, ongoing research, NASA and oceanography. I also enjoy indie fiction in areas of fantasy, urban and sci-fi. There is usually a book not far from reach.
What is your inspiration?
I draw inspiration from many sources. Mostly from real life events going on around me. Generally i will imagine the opposite of what is going on around me. Which is probably why I have a dozen projects on the go at any time, I shift to different projects depending on what mood I am in.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing when I was twelve. I moved back from Germany with my mother and sister in the end of a series of traumatic experiences. Writing was my coping mechanism to dealing with the trauma. It is something that has taken me many years to deal with and writing is something that has been with me that whole time.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book deals with the rampant corruption that has run through the secret magic council. Its following powerful individuals who have the opportunity to actually deal with it, and if they do.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
When I first started writing the only way to do so was through a publisher. There was the high probability of not getting chosen, and even if you did you lost all creative writes to it. I was privileged to live through a time of change and watched the rise of computers and the internet. This included the dramatic change of publishing as self-publishing and ebooks came onto the market. I knew when self-publishing became a possibility that it was for me. I can chose my own art, hire my own editors, and have direction of my books.
