Interview with Per Holbo

Published 2016-01-19.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a rather rough neighbourhood in Horsens, Denmark. In the 80's the tensions between two rivaling gangs had grown to a level of violence that drove the Police to start a section dedicated to fight gang wars. My sister, two brothers and I managed to stay fairly out of trouble, but of course this environment has made an impact on my view on life. Even the harshest criminal is usually soft inside and every person can change their violent behaviour if they set their mind to it and if they get the support to do so.
When did you first start writing?
I don't remember exactly, but I wasn't very old, maybe 6 or 7 years old. Back then I wrote a wide variety of stories using pen and paper. When I was 14 years old I bought an Olivetti Electronic typewriter and I remember with a smile how I used to write way too fast for that machine to keep up, even though I only used my own 3-4 fingered system. When the buffer on that old Olly was full it made a long beep and I let go of the keyboard waiting for it to finish. Then I would continue the next few sentences till the buffer screamed "enough already! Let me think!" again. I had that machine for almost 4 years, before it was worn out and I bought myself an Amiga 500 that lasted the next 5 years, before I could finally afford a normal PC with Microsoft Word installed.
Describe your desk
Ahem... well... I'm not sure what my desk really looks like. The view is kind of blocked ;-)
What's the story behind your latest book?
'Skrymer's Glove' is a science fiction, where the basic idea is that Norse Mythology emerged as a result of alien races visiting our planet through time. Additionally I was inspired by the finding of a mysterious object in the Baltic Sea between Russia and Finland/Sweden. Search Google for "Ocean X-team" to find out more...
What motivated you to become an indie author?
After having several stories gathering dust inside my laptop for ages, I suddenly stumbled on a couple of web sites, where you can upload your books. The most important motivation to go the Indie way instead of traditional publishing is that the traditional book business seems to suck out money and life from both authors and readers.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
The easy and intuitive build of the interface of Smashwords and the distribution network gives me time to do what I cherish the most as an author: writing great stories for everyone to enjoy!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Watching a story come to life! When I write, the beginning of the story is usually a bit of a struggle, but then, as the story progresses, it gradually lives a life of its own and at some point, I feel like I'm just writing down what the story itself dictates - that's when I find it most inspiring to write!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am married and have 4 kids. Need I say more?
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I have different approaches. One is to search by genre. Another is to just surf through databases in the hope that some interesting title pops up. But usually I'm most influenced in my choice by friends recommending books...
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
No, I don't remember the first story I read, but when I was about 12 years old, I borrowed Isaac Asimov's 'Foundation' trilogy and found the basic plot of using mathematic probability to determine the most likely future amazing!
How do you approach cover design?
It depends on the book, but if I have the money for it, I prefer having a pro do it for me. That way, I can focus on writing.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Foundation Trilogy for its complex and innovative plot
Most of Hans Christian Andersens work for his ability to insert several layers: for children, for parents, for politicians and so on...
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy for its crazy and philosophical approach to the meaning of life
Ecclesiastes by Salomon (from the Bible) for its philosophical approach to the meaning of life
The Harry Potter series for its entertaining value
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Usually I read eBooks on my Android phone, but occasionally I use my PC
