Interview with Mark von Sponeck

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
My father worked for the UN, so we moved around every 3-4 years to a different country, mainly in Africa and Asia. It helped influence my writing and made me believe that one should learn about the world, whether one travels or not. It is my hope that my books will help to inspire kids to learn about our world.
Why Children's books?
For 15 year I worked for Global Nomads Group, where we connected mainly high school and middle school kids all over the world, to learn about each others cultures and lives. Now, I would like to expose even a younger group of children to our world, with the idea of instilling respect and appreciation for each others differences and similarities. I hope to accomplish this via my picture book series Prince Cy Explores.
In your Prince Cy Explores series, why is the end of the book, just the beginning?
After one learns about 10 cool places around planet earth, at the end of the book the child and parent are encouraged to upload a picture of their favorite place and include a few fun facts, such as which country it is in and what language one speaks there. The concept is that they can then learn about different places from one another online.
Another Prince Cy Explores book coming up?
Yes! The next one will be about Prince Cy coming back to planet earth and 10 children will again show him cool things, but rather than places, it will be their favorite animals. The concept is then kids will upload a pic of their favorite animal, with a few educational tasks as well.
