Interview with Kay Botha

What's the story behind your latest book?
I was inspired to capture the struggle people have with adopting a more natural approach to the world, in the midst of constant chaos. In my upcoming novel Wind Chaser, the world has returned to the wilderness of centuries ago. But as with everything, there are those who want to tame what cannot be controlled- nature, in the form of a wild horse.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The freedom it grants me to write what I want to write, instead of conforming to a certain bubble.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords can be described in one word as this- ease. And in the crazy life of an author, having a simple publishing platform can take a load of weight off ones' shoulders.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Experiencing the adventures it can take me on. The greatest lessons in life can be learnt from the pages of a book.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything and more. My fans are the reason I pump out a thousand words a day. They are the reason I continue writing. Without them I would be speaking to a brick wall.
What are you working on next?
I am currently editing my upcoming novel Wind Chaser, set to release in late December. It is a Dystopian adventure about a captive girl and the bond she forms with the wild horse imprisoned beside her.
Who are your favorite authors?
The great movement of female authors into English literature, specifically Harper Lee and the Bronte sisters.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My animals. Of course, I have two Great Danes, so my sleep is ruined the moment they wake up in the morning and begin running around my bedroom.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
There's nothing I enjoy more than curling up with a good book and a cup of tea to relax my mind.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Word of mouth and Goodreads.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It was terrible. I was eight and the plot involved three girls who couldn't decide which boy they wanted to date. The H key didn't work on the computer at the time so I spent my days looking for words that didn't need it.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story I ever recall reading was Little Women. It opened with the promise of childhood clichés and just completely wrecked my mind afterwards. It was my first time closing a book and just being absolutely speechless.
How do you approach cover design?
With imagination! You have to look at a cover and ask yourself, "Would I buy this book?"
Obviously not everyone likes the same type of covers. Some people like busy, colourful covers and other people prefer a quiet, more conserved background. What matters as an author is whether I myself am happy with my cover. I want to put something out there that I'm 100% invested in, and proud of.
What do you read for pleasure?
Anything sad! If it makes me cry, I want it. The added bonus is gritty, dark, soul-contorting novels that make my chest ache.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I'm a paperback girl, through and through.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
The Tweety bird. Twitter helps a lot to connect authors with readers, which plenty of other platforms fail to do.
Describe your desk
It belongs to my dad and is cluttered with junk, some of which are Smurf-blue headphones, pencils and the first paper-bound edition of my upcoming novel, Wind Chaser.
When did you first start writing?
I was eight and indulging in my love of Harry Potter. At this tender age, I discovered Fanfiction and set about writing some of my own.
What is your writing process?
Dream it, get a basic summary in my head and then plotplotplot until I'm happy enough to start the first chapter.
