Interview with Q K Carpenter

When did you first start writing?
As soon as I realized that it was easier to write about dinosaurs than draw them.
What's the story behind your latest book?
In the finest 90s romcom tradition, I started writing this book as a cheap attempt to make money but almost immediately fell in love with the story. There was a big, tearful confrontation where I fessed up and admitted my feelings. Drew Barrymore was probably there. It was great.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Traditional publishing seems like a beautiful ship filled with elegant people eating exquisite food, and while everyone knows the ship is sinking, it's considered impolite to discuss it.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
You know that moment when you're putting together a couch from Ikea and you're able to recognize your work as a couch? That.
What are you working on next?
Hot future pirates.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Loving myself and my functional relationships.
Describe your desk
Like a case of Diet Coke died of natural causes and it took its landlord three days to find the body.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in [REDACTED], which was just such a perfect place for [INDECIPHERABLE SCRAWLING]. In fact, sometimes I still drive back to go [FRENZIED SMEARS OF VANTABLACK].
What do your fans mean to you?
In addition to just being awesome people, they're a reminder that I exist beyond my own private insecurities. That there's a public Me.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I don't need to sleep because the [REDACTED] provides perpetual energy.
