Interview with Warren Shuman

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes I do. I was about 9 - 10 years old. A book written by Richard Halliburton, "Seven League Boots". He was a member of The Explorer's Club, with other famous members like Peary, Lowell Thomas, and many others. He climbed the Matterhorn, he swam in the pool at the Taj Mahal. Very impressive. I'm sure that it spurred me to travel much around our world.
How do you approach cover design?
As an experinced ad-man and marketer,I know that the cover of book is a "Billboard" advertising what is inside for the reader. If the story doesn't deliver on the premise of the cover the reader will feel cheated. If the cover doesn't grab the attention and interest of the reader; excite curiosity, it isn't doing the job. I work with artists to produce my covers for each book, whether fiction, or non-fiction. No stock-photos..
What are your five favorite books, and why?
An impossible question. In my library I have more than 350 books at last count. 90% are for research and reference. You will also find James Joyce, Elmore Leonard, E.A.Poe, Lovecraft, Hemingway, Zane Grey, Robert Benchley, and more. My special genres are Crime, Action, Adventure, Horror, Thriller My E-Book: "Body Scavengers" is an example, soon to be publshed.
What do you read for pleasure?
I have been a SiFi Fan since I was 9 years old, when a friend gave me "Thrilling Wonder Stories" magazines edited by famed Hugo Gernsbach, with stories written by Isaac Asimov and other Greats. The future has always facsinated me.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My eyes, of course. (Duh!) I do have a kindle on the desktop of my computer.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I wrote, self-publshed and marketed my 1st book (hard cover 1995) through my small press: Frugal Marketer Publishing, LLC. "How to Market Your Business in the 90's -- an Essential Tool-box for Small Business". I had to learn the Publishing Industry from the ground up. I worked through Bowker, Ingram, got copyrights,I drove a traveling book tour (with boxes of copies in my car) through the US at book retailers, libraries, radio and Tv stations, performing seminars, teaching at community colleges, and more. The up-graded sequel "Winning Success With Assertive Marketing" is an available on Smashwords, and Amazon. I promote through small business sites, and my small business blog: "Grindstone" on my website, and my Facebook page.

Describe your desk
It's hidden by an abstract group of papers that only I can decipher and understand where everything I need is.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the Boston MA close suburbs. In that time we started Kindergarten at 4 years of age. Literally, my brother Sam introduced me to books at our Public Library. He was 9 years older than I. He actually taught me to read by phonetics. I have been an avid reader since. Books are sacred to me. I have been writing all through my varied careers. I retired 6 years ago and have been writing full time. I have a back-list that fills a whole file.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Premise: "Body Scavengers" A homicide detective kills his wife and children while D.U.I. after a New years Eve party. He is disgraced, hits bottom hard, wanders the streets into a philanthropic Hospice -- where he is drugged to donate his body-organs. The cover design is being formatted now.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
REJECTIOn, REJECTION AND REJECTION, after attending three ABA conventions.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I am hopeful, always positive. I'm a newcimer to Smashwords. As the Zen-Master says: "We'll see..."
