Interview with Jodie Halliday

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Definitely. It was set in Switzerland and involved a girl who was introduced to a ritualistic religious cult who wanted to force her into joining their group. The story involves graphic descriptions of her losing her virginity with her first boyfriend and a series of schoolgirl loves, many of which are videotaped and used to force her in the final scene as she is strapped down and prepared for the priest's initiation. It certainly wasn't based on real life, but many of the scenes were taken from personal trips to Switzerland. I seem to recall it was over 200 pages long and took me about two years to write in my spare time.
What is your writing process?
My ultimate goal is to deliver an interesting and memorable story. The interest develops from the character's surroundings and interaction with other people. Making it memorable comes from long, believable sex scenes which fit with the character's needs at the time. I truly dislike scenes that are two paragraphs long where the girl knocks on the door, the man takes her in and within ten seconds she is having the most amazing orgasm of her life, then goes home, never telling anyone.

In order to achieve the above I create a framework for the book which pushes me to deliver a story-line that is interesting in itself. If I'm not telling a story then I don't think I can hold a reader's attention.
How do you approach cover design?
I've standardized my vision of Holly Craig and will stick with her over the next 9 books - all of which I have outlined already. I am proficient in Photoshop so creating the artwork is not an issue. What tends to slow me down is the title. I want it to be indicative and slightly mysterious, but that tends to result in puns. Quite honestly I really don't like the title "Shake That Tree" because it refers to Holly's family tree and some might think that the book is about tree-huggers (not that there's anything wrong with that). If anyone has a better title after reading it through I would gladly listen.
What do you read for pleasure?
I tend to read global news stories, travelogues, anything to do with IT and banking.
Where did the character for Holly originate?
She's fundamentally a 'nice girl' who was brought up well by her parents. But I wanted her to be inexperienced in love and slightly naive about sex. We see this in her choice of her first boyfriend who has no clue about making her happy. I also wanted to show that like every other woman, Holly isn't just about sex. She has feelings, she enjoys giving through her charitable deeds, she is curious about love and her body and at times she's vulnerable. These traits set up the series "Holly Craig Erotica" for continual revelations about herself, her friends and her family.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in England although I don't think this really influenced my writing as I started somewhat late in life. I've traveled to, and worked in, many countries around the world and this more than anything has opened my eyes to variety. I take liberties with spelling and word usage, happily using the word 'knickers' when people might expect 'panties', trousers and so on. I hope it helps to make the book different and causes people to think and dream a little during the scenes.
Is there a follow-up to Shake That Tree?
Holly's adventures in Shake That Tree take her through to the end of High School. From that point on we enter the 9 book series of Holly Craig Erotica. Two books have been completed already. Book 1 sees Holly finishing her final few months at university, ditching her hopeless boyfriend and meeting, by chance, the love of her life who will transport her from a life of mundane sex to a whole new world of pleasure and excitement. Book 2 sees Holly in her first job and while out on assignment she is forced into a threesome with her client.

Each book takes about 15 days to write and read through four or five times before I am ready for proof-reading. Both these books are ready to enter that phase which I actually pay for myself. I hate reading literature which has spelling errors, logic errors (he took her knickers off 30 seconds ago so how could he do it again?) or simple grammatical errors. I have to believe that this sort of problem grates with readers just as it does with me. After proof-reading they will be released for sale and I'll start Book 3.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I continue to be amazed by the ease with which I can publish. Having Smashwords do all the heavy lifting with regard formatting and distribution means I can focus entirely on
Holly' s welfare, make sure she is treated well by her boyfriend and that she continues to have adventures which stretch her imagination and comfort level. She's a special girl and Smashwords helps me look after her.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I like to add literary puns and humor into the books. Most of it will be recognized immediately but there are a couple of little gems which would only be identified by people in certain countries. In addition, it adds interest to show Holly failing at times, just like we all do. When she recovers from those failures I feel true joy for her, as I hope do readers.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I like to visit the gym four or five times a week to run or use the rowing machine while people-watching.
