Interview with Magenta Books

Published 2014-03-23.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favourite author of all time is Philip K Dick. I also like many other science fiction authors. I love Kurt Vonnegut. I think Tim Powers is amazing. I like classic literature too.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
This is such an existential question and I don't have a good really good answer beyond habit.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I currently work full time to support my large family and life style. I would really love to write full time and hope to make this transition in the next year or so.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I read authors that I know and revisit a lot of work that I have previously read in print books. I also look at the work of my erotica-writer peers and buy their work from time to time.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I wrote my first proper story when I was fifteen years old for English at High School. My teacher was very impressed with my imagination. It was a horror story about a young child and their animated teddy bear.
What is your writing process?
I write and lightly edit as I go. This is not the general advice but it works for me. How this works is each day when I start writing again I review what I have written the day before. This gets me into the mind set of the story and helps with the flow. I still do a more serious edit at the end of the writing process of course, and many times.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first stories I read was Christopher Robin, with reading assistance from my grandmother. This was poetry written for children. I think it turned me off poetry for the rest of my life.
How do you approach cover design?
I do my own covers using images that I select for their power and connection to the story. My erotic stories are peopled by string women as the central characters. I try to make covers that reflect the subject matter without running into problems associated with nudity.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I love a lot of books, hundreds of books have really touched me.
The two books that immediaytely came to mind are A Scanner Darkly by PKD and Slaughter House Five by Kurt Vonnegut.
These books are humanistic explorations of people in desperate situations, mixed with the mundane occurrences of everyday life.
Tom Sawyer is memorable for me, as is Great Expectations.
I really really the Hyperion Series by Dan Simmons too, and I think of that as one huge magnificent book that would make the most amazing movies.
What do you read for pleasure?
I rarely read for pleasure because I am too busy reading and writing for my paid work and then writing for my author work.
I have many books on my e reader and beside the bed that sit there for a long time.
I want to read more for pleasure, but I need to find a way.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Sony Ereader but I also read many books with the Kindle app on my phone, tablet and notebook.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I have become quite experienced in running google and facebook ad campaigns. I am interested in exploring other options too.
