Interview with Robert Cutillo

When did you first start writing?
I first began to write when I was twenty-four.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favourite authors are William Faulkner and Cormac McCarthy.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I ever wrote was a short story called The Man in the Room, which is currently unpublished. It is about a man who is locked in a room, and he is unable to leave it until he has reflected on his life and who he is.
What is your writing process?
I'm still trying to find a process that suits me. Each story I have written has been in different ways, ranging from a detailed plan to purely letting the writing dictate how the story progresses. If I plan, I handwrite, and when it comes to the actual writing of my story, I type on my Macbook.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Great Gatsby because of the language used; The Sound and the Fury because it was the first book that introduced me to the stream of consciousness technique; and Blood meridian because of the unconventional style that McCarthy uses.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle, although I sometimes use iBooks on my iPad.
Describe your desk
My desk is cluttered with random things, so I prefer to write on my bed.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The challenge of creating an engaging story.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read all sorts: literary, fantasy, murder/mystery, non-fiction, etc.
