Interview with Debsy Girard

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I can't wait to start my day. First of all, I can hear all the birds and squirrels chirping in my back yard waiting to be fed. Once that's done, the cat is waiting for his brushing and treat, I then feed him. Now I'm ready to decide which healthy drink to make myself, either warm turmeric water or warm lemon water. I enjoy that while I check emails and answer anything pressing. I also enjoy an early walk and a healthy breakfast. My point is, at this stage in life, I want to take the time to relish every single minute and I can't wait to get started every morning.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing I spend time catching up on administrative duties that I've left for a rainy day. I also try to learn something new about my computer as this complicated, square packaged bundle of infinite technology, has seen me pull my hair out on many occasions. I never stop trying to master it.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Actually, I do. In grade three I received my first A+ on a short story. It hooked me. After that I strove to maintain that mark. I didn't always, but I knew my future would have something to do with writing.
What is your writing process?
When I first started I had a process. Not so much any more. You see, I also write romance fiction under two other pseudonyms - Deborrah Girard (mainstream) and Devorah Day(adult), so it was important to maintain a system. I still do, just not so vigilant. I keep paper files, computer files, I still develop my characters, write a synopsis and all the main details, but if I don't get it on paper, I don't worry about it. I know what direction I'm going in with my project.
How do you approach cover design?
Ah, cover design. That's one of those things I'm just learning how to do myself. I haven't mastered it yet, but I will.
What do you read for pleasure?
I have a favorite magazine I always buy - Woman's World. I also love going through cook books. I have box upon box full of them, much to my husband's chagrin. I'm also into health books.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I had a Sony e-reader. Somehow I've managed to mangle it. I don't know what I did to it, but it won't work. I had my daughter-in-law here and had her try, but no way. So now I'm faced with taking it in to see what can be done. Another example of how technology and I don't mix.
Describe your desk
MESSY! However, I know where every single thing is. I heard that was a sign of genius...and no, I don't keep it that way on purpose. lol
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small town in the northern part of my country, where the winters are long and the summers are short. It was really necessary to find something you enjoyed to do and build on that.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
This is my first round with Smashwords as an independent author. So far, the experience has been positive. I have to admit I was afraid to get started, all due to my computer woes, but this program makes it easy for me to navigate.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I can progress at my own speed. In turn, being able to do so lends a docile, even-tempered quality to my whole day. Got to love that.
