Interview with R. Roy Lutz

What do you read for pleasure?
I read fiction mostly. I like Dean Koontz and Lee Child. My all-time favorite author is Frank Herbert.
Describe your desk
Eclectic. I am surrounded in various collectibles. If it's old and/or weird, I've probably got one on my desk or hanging on the wall. I model my office after Ray Bradbury's office.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I'm still a newbie. From my marketing background, I think word-of-mouth is most effective, if you can do it.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up a rural area of Michigan. I had only a few friends and neighbors, but they were close. My experiences and adventures with my neighborhood friends often sneak into my writing.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing creatively in the '80's, but I didn't start working on my first novel until 2006.
What's the story behind your latest book?
"God's Dice" grew out of two interests of mine--the paradox of free will vs. fate, and my experience working with autistic adults. Much is still unknown about causes and nature of Autism Spectrum Disorders.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I thoroughly enjoy creating 4-dimensional characters. I have a passion for characters who have a past, present and future. I love to "watch" them grow and change as the story proceeds.
What are you working on next?
I am working on a sequel to "God's Dice." The working title is "Phylogeny." I'm thinking about completing a trilogy.
Who are your favorite authors?
Frank Herbert, Dean Koontz, Lee Childs, Arthur C. Clarke, Louis L'Amour are just a few.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My wife Chris makes sure that happens.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
My older sister read "Tom Sawyer" to me when I was about eight. It was a revelation. It introduced me to the fascinating world of books. I credit her with the origins of my interest in writing.
How do you approach cover design?
I have to admit, I steal concepts that I've seen used on other covers, and I try to use them in a new and interesting way.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
"Tom Sawyer," my first novel. "Dune," powerful character development. "2001 A Space Odyssey," Escape. "Watchers," Suspense thriller. "Persuader," Gritty hero.
