Interview with Rachel Medhurst

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. I was about eight. A friend and I wrote a series about two American girls.
What do you read for pleasure?
Fiction that I can get lost in.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I entered a competition where you had to write the rest of the first chapter from a small paragraph. The Deadliners grew from that entry and I was surprised at how a whole novel was able to come from a short first chapter.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Creative freedom and authorpreneur excitement.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Getting lost as the story writes itself through my pen.
What are you working on next?
Avoidables is my dystopian short story series about Avoidables and Perfects. They live on the opposite side of the river. Hope is an Avoidable that wants to help beat discrimination. The first series will be free. Each series comprises of five episodes with each one being delivered to your inbox every week.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Just being alive keeps me inspired. I love to write, read and walk in nature. I could do this all day!
What is your writing process?
I'm a flow writer. I sit down and just let the words come. I'm often as surprised as my readers. I never know my ending before I start and I love the anticipation of what's going to happen.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I remember my mother reading The Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton to me. I got lost in the story and was able to be there with the characters. As soon as I was able, I started to read it myself. My imagination grew and this inspired me to write.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Surrey, England. My childhood was challenging so I read to escape. Books gave me hope, so now I write to give others hope. Everyone has a story and I want my writing to help others to know that they can do anything they want. My fiction is always underlined with values and existential answers.
