Interview with Rae Owens

Describe your desk
Amid the stacks of paper and books sits a little blue Betta Fish named Birdie who stares at a pale, red-headed,wavering blob all day. Occasionally, it will waggle a strange, pale fin at him. He only stares back in apathy.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Rural Alabama. You'd only truly understand if you've lived there as a pasty nerd with a Monty Python obsession.
When did you first start writing?
Since I could write? I only began publishing in the last year, though.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My next book, still untitled, is an adult romance about a foul-mouthed grocery store checkout girl and the nice guy chef who woos her with his homemade waffles and chiseled abs.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I like making my own covers and writing what I like, and not what I think will sell.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I guess we'll find out in the next month.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I get to write the story that I want to read.
What do your fans mean to you?
There is nothing like finding someone who actually places real value on your work. Whoever you are, I truly, deeply, madly love you.
What are you working on next?
After I finish up this next erotica novel, I'm actually going to co-write a zombie novel with a friend.
Who are your favorite authors?
Neil Gaiman, Stephen King, Lisa Kleypas, Karen Marie Moning, Jane Austen, Harlan Ellison, Chuck Palahniuk, Don Winslow, Christopher Moore, Jerry Gerold, Micah Chaim Thomas, Martian L. Beast, Alexa Riley...actually, just look at my Twitter follows.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The correct answer is coffee. People might go with a lot of touchy-feely crap, but it's coffee.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I Tweet way too much, and I'm ridiculously addicted to Sims.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Freebooksy is a great resource. I also TRY to read all of the self-pubbed authors that I'm friends with. Again, check out my Twitter follows.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I wrote a story about my neighbor's horse. I was obsessed with horses as a kid.
What is your writing process?
Drink coffee, put fingers to keyboard whenever I can find a free moment. Hate what I write, complain to a friend, and then delete it even after he tells me it's "not THAT bad". I'm no example to follow in that regard. I have no cool tricks or organizational process outside of carrying around a flash drive everywhere I go.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
It was Hansel & Gretel, and I vaguely remember thinking that there's no WAY I would've let that old lady witch catch me before I ate her whole house.
How do you approach cover design?
I look at a bunch of pictures until I find one that looks similar to the idea in my head, and then proceed to make 3000 versions of the cover until I'm somewhat happy with the end result. Fonts are my arch nemeses.
