Interview with Greg Dragon

What is your writing process?
I like to be inspired, but we can't always get the sexy muse ready can we? The thing that works for me is maintaining a schedule, a tight schedule and rituals. My normal writing area is either on a bench in the park (if the bugs are playing nice) or in the corner of a local Barnes and Nobles / Starbucks. I put on my ear buds playing white noise *(or Mozart) and I just find a scene that inspires me and start from there. This is why I end up gluing elements together at the end of a book, I have a hard time going from start to end (my mind seldom works like that) so I just write, and when it's time to say "fin", I get my glue gun.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I started writing as a young boy, so I assume it was something nasty and devious. I actually remember my mother finding a "book" that I wrote and stapled together and telling me how embarrassing it was for her to read it. Not that it was erotica or anything, but it may as well had been - the amount of detail I'd get into. The funny thing is I probably didn't know what the hell I was talking about either, just raging hormones. Then again, I did see Caligula unrated at around 12...
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
When I'm not looking for sequels to authors that I follow, I like to read books from fellow indie authors. Recently I've taken on the challenge to read 60 books this year (2015), so I've been grabbing books that look interesting (blurb/previews) and then going through it.
How do you approach cover design?
I have a background in graphic design and I am a natural artist (realism, pencil drawings, paint...) so I tend to do most of my covers myself. Lately, due to time constraints and the need for a less burnt-out mind to create, I've been hiring artists that do it professionally. Cover design is very important to me, I want people to want my book, even before reading it and determining whether or not they like it. Indie writing also comes with the stigma of amateurish covers, I don't want to have that placed on my work, so I put together a professional package. Cover art is important.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
PIMP The Story of My Life - Robert Beck
Who can showcase prose more than an ex-pimp with a mind of a genius? This book made me want to improve the way I write, and the first page is so powerful that I've been trying to emulate it's style for years.

1984 - George Orwell
Not much to say here, this is the book that has affected us all.

DUNE - Frank Herbert
The fantasy, technology, and lore of DUNE could be it's own religion. This book is my Star Wars and I hold it close to heart.

How to Win Friends and Influence People - Dale Carnegie
It made me into a nicer person and a better business owner all around.

Rich Dad Poor Dad - Robert Kiyosaki
For an artist to break out of la-la land, this was what did it. RDPD gave me a hunger to learn about money and how it works and 100 books later I feel a lot better about my future.
What do you read for pleasure?
I like to read books on Organized Crime... weird I know. I go through non-fiction theory books, true crime non-fiction, and the occasional fiction book about men bending the law to achieve their goals.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Word of mouth. Especially when you ping your true readers. I've spent boatloads of money trying to sell books intended for macho young men to older women that want romance; it was all a waste of money and time. Finding the group that wants the type of books that I write leads to people telling other people about it, and you pick up readers that not only want your book but follow you to support the sequels that come after it.
Describe your desk
Very neat... I find that your desk reflects your state of being, and I like everything right where it's supposed to be.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I partially grew up in Florida and in Jamaica, W.I. I don't think it influences my writing per se, but I have lived with different families of various cultures and it has allowed me to be very versatile in my thinking. People may look at me and expect the "African American experience" in my writing but what I offer is a little bit more than that, I offer a melange of crazy, based on how my mind works.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Phasers of Anstractor tells the story of Rafian VCA, a complicated super soldier that leads a special forces group known as the Phasers. Rafian is sort of a player but he's married, so while the galaxy goes to hell he has a wife wanting to kill him over his indiscretions. While he's trying to fix his marriage, his mortal enemy sends a spy into his fleet to find out about him, he has to juggle the two situations and it all leads to a big mess. Phasers isn't available here, but you can check my website for where it's being sold.
