Interview with Raiden Germain

Who are your favorite authors?
I love Anaïs Nin, fascinated by Vladimir Megre, absorbed by Elizabeth Smart, Wilhelm Busch, Gabriel Garcia Márques.
What do your fans mean to you?
An incredible amount!
Fans are people of my tribe I didn't even know existed and through my book have manifested.
I have managed to reach people, I touched them and they touched me.
What are you working on next?
Just having published my third book, I have no other 'big' writing scheduled as yet.
A bit of poetry perhaps in between other musings as my pen cries loud when I ignore it.
Occasionally I have considered the idea of writing a script for a movie or play.
The protagonist GG in beyond Cloudia, might very well want to share some other stories.
I let it happen.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
A drive to express creativity; the need to air some thoughts; the fabulous time of dawn.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
uhh, it is amazing where surfing takes me.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, I had small pox and was bored and had this dialogue in my mind that was going on between some people in a neighbouring village and asked for pen and paper but could hardly write yet, but somehow the page never survived.
What is your writing process?
I dedicate exclusive time. That is my flute that makes the imagination dance more than anything else. Nevertheless I do get up in between and do some reps on the gym or have a plate of food but all within my writing dimension. I set myself deadlines. This chapter to be finished by that date etc. I know all the excuses by now and when I slip I simply look in the mirror and wag the finger. I can't stand someone moaning at me and I have to live up to my own expectations. Often they are unreal and then I become unpalatable for a while. I will delay stuff around me and loath interruptions. Yeah, and so on.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Probably the stories of Winnetou and Old Shatterhand, written by Karl May. His imagination and ability to make me part of the story, as if I was there amongst the Indians and creeping up to the baddies, had no parallel, especially as we had no TV in those days.
How do you approach cover design?
I toss and turn, create a deliberate intent to come up with something really smashingly appropriate, change a couple of times and then, I think, finally get it right and don't look back knowing it is spot on.
What do you read for pleasure?
I am a browser when it gets to reading. I love books written about how life was in the olden days in Africa. Like Hunter's Wanderings in Africa by FC Selous, books about flying, again preferably over Africa, the continent I totally love. Magical realism. I generally do many other things than reading for pleasure because my writing time entails a lot of reading.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Probably would be a Kindle but I actually don't have one at the moment and most e-stuff happens in front of the iMac. When I am not in front of the Mac I usually am otherwise engaged anyway.
Describe your desk
Orderly. Real-journal open on the left with a pencil for quick notes. iMac in front of me. iPhone nearby. Used books either open or in the vicinity. 25-35 browser sessions open, – yes true. A few word documents, not just the main one I am working on, and a few spreadsheets and my online journal. The iMac stands on a Bógónlanfini, a Malian mud cloth, and there is always a chitenge or a kikoi to slap at mosquitos in the summer season.
When did you first start writing?
My first attempt was when I was six or seven and then never again seriously until about ten years ago.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Some stuff I just had to say out loud and Intercourse with Life gave me that opportunity.

I feel for the animals of Africa. I know their plight. I dreamt of a solution and found Austrafica in my mind.

Beyond Cloudia looks at the life of the protagonist called GG, short for Galaxy Galacus. He didn't have the best of starts, but deep inside always knew it could be different. The reader is taken through various experiences and thought provoking musings, philosophical thought, and interesting events, till GG eventually finds the key and the answer to a happy and marvelosome life.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Being a free spirit, traditional publishing just didn't cut it for me. I have to write my own script and an indie author has that freedom.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love it when the mind fires on all cylinders. Creativity needs an outlet and imagination so engaged responds with zeal. It is a magically rewarding feeling when someone enjoys your words, even greater than developing software.

It was a prophetic dream of another reality. Africa and Australia had been drifting apart for 300 million years and now wanted to be together again. Animals in Africa were pleading for help because repulsive atrocities were committed on them. The dream sketched the animals and the flora of Africa in a part of the peacefully dormant, grandiose and breathtakingly beautiful Great South Land.

A fictional memoir of a boy born with the knowledge that 'it can be different.' The protagonist is GG, Galaxy Galacus. Before finding his true I-am-ness his experiences are dramatic, adventurous and tumultuous.
