Interview with Richard Conkey

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I was aware that as a new author my chances of getting a book published by the traditional means of using a publishing house would be slim.
As an indie author I believe I have greater control over such aspects as the book's cover design and its content.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
The key advantage in using Smashwords is that there is no lengthy time delay between submission of your book and its distribution. Through Smashwords every author has free access to global distribution.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
For me, it is the warm feeling of achievement, when someone says I enjoyed your book or article.
What do your fans mean to you?
A lot. Without the interaction of writer and reader there is no means of identifying if you are doing the right thing and giving the reader what they want.
What are you working on next?
Hopefully a sequel. I have a lot of material which I had to exclude from last book which will allow me to write a 'follow-on'.
Who are your favorite authors?
There are so many. Dan Brown is one of my special favourites as his work is so easy to read. Once you start reading one of his books it is very difficult to leave it down.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The fact that I am still alive. There is always something on the agenda for the new day.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend most of my spare time in the garden. I love to potter about in my greenhouse and outside I am mainly interested in growing vegetables. My wife, Noelle looks after the flowers.
When I am not gardening I enjoy a game of bowls.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Many through my kindle.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes I do. It was many years ago and was a lengthy article for a magazine.
What is your writing process?
I try to formulate a structured plan. Once I have an idea of the main story line I then consider as to how I can get there and then how it will end. In fiction you have to be careful that the end does not run contrary to history. For example, that aliens have attacked the world and have taken over the US, when we all know that has not happened.
How do you approach cover design?
I usually leave it up to experts. I am fortunate that my son-in-law is an expert in cover design.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read gardening magazines and science fiction novels.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Mine is a Kindle.
Describe your desk
It is fairly cluttered with pens, pencils and papers. I have two piles of used A4 paper that was originally used for draft copies of chapters. I use them as scape paper for all sorts of things.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing in my early twenties with short articles for local magazines.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The book is essentially about the location of the Ark of the Covenant. When modern technology indicates the possible location, the information has global implications on a massive scale.
