Interview with Rashaun J. Allen

What are three things readers don’t know about you?
• I once went sky diving and met my heart on the ground
• I've been inside a pyramid in Egypt
• I tend to eat with my eyes
How did you get started writing?
Growing up I kept a journal. It was my feelings as rhymes, stories and sayings.
Do you ever question your decision to become a writer?
Absolutely not. Writing is what I’m meant to do. The only question that haunts me is “Did I give myself enough time and space to write today?”
What are your five favorite books?
• The Glass Castle By Jeanette Walls
• A Tree Grows in Brooklyn By Betty Smith
• Things Fall Apart By Chinua Achebe
• A Hope in The Unseen By Ron Sunskind
• The Kite Runner Khaleed Hosseini
Do you ever suffer from writers block?
When I am unable to create I move into a different aspect of writing. Usually, I will take the time to rewrite previous work to make it smoother. Or work on the arc of the story I'm trying to show.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Engage your readers whether it's at a book signing or within social media. When you make connections with readers, they are more likely to give your book a try.
What do you read for pleasure?
I like to read memoirs and stories that have characters that I can like, despise and see their progression.
What is something that surprised you as a writer?
Discovering that I received more support as a writer from strangers than people I knew.
What is your writing process?
I like to free write a couple draft on paper. Afterwards, I put in on the computer to edit and polish.
Do you have any advice for aspiring writers/authors?
Write something you’d like to read and make sure you're having fun.
