Interview with Ravenna Young

What do you read for pleasure?
I read from several different genres, but I particularly enjoy romance/mystery & suspense. However, I find myself drawn, as of late, to paranormal and sci-fi. I love Dan Brown, Charlaine Harris, Janet Evanovich, and John Grisham. I will try any genre once. I also have a soft spot for indie authors, and try to read one new indie book a week...there is so much undiscovered talent out there!
What is your e-reading device of choice?
This is a tough one, because I have a few. My main choice would have to be my Kobo Glo. I also read on my cell phone and computer, via Kindle. I particularly like the Kindle desktop version and have been contemplating the purchase of a Kindle reader.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I'm new to this, but I would have to say that social media is where it's at. I have been able to get the word out via Facebook and Twitter. The best part is being able to interact with my readers. I am amazed at the level of support I am receiving.
Describe your desk
What desk? I think I have one, but it's buried under a mass of paper and books.
When did you first start writing?
I have been writing since I was a teenager...a long time. It started with a love for poetry and short fiction and has developed from there.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It's kind of a blend of genres. Rookie P.I, who is dealing with a messed up personal life, only to discover she has the ability to see the future in her dreams...Romance meets mystery/suspense and mashed with a wee bit of paranormal mystery. I am working on the second book in this series.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I love the idea of taking charge of my creations. I am enjoying the learning process and challenges that I have been faced with. I am not motivated by money. More or less, I just want my books to get out there and entertain.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is user friendly and they offer resources that fully answer your questions. I am happy with my decision to publish through Smashwords.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The best part for me is when I am in my writing groove, and my story flows in a different direction then what I had planned. Being able to get the story out of my head is a challenge, but the funny part is, it usually works out.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are everything! Without readers, we authors have nothing. I have nothing but respect for the opinion of my readers. I believe they help shape the effectiveness of my writing, while motivating me to write more.
What are you working on next?
I am working on a sequel to Third Eye P.I. and a stand alone. Hoping to have them out by June 2015.
