Interview with Ray Harris

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes! I wrote an ideological story based on animal characters for partially illiterate people. The aim was to assist people at a critical time in our country's history, to make informed decisions on how to vote. I wrote this story when I was 30 years old. I thought at the time that it was the best story ever written, but soon discovered I had a great deal to learn about writing! The story was eventually published after about twelve re-writes, and is probably the cause of me being half bald now!
What is your writing process?
Head down, go man go! I usually write every night for at least four hours. I find my head is clearest after ten pm. The quiet of the night helps my creative juices to flow. I have also found it most helpful as a writer to develop the habit of writing something every day, even if I scrap it. This helps me to avoid 'writer's block'.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I most certainly do! It was Bambi, and I loved it, especially since I lived in a natural environment at the time, and had a lot of contact with baby animals.
How do you approach cover design?
I usually have a very clear idea of what image and 'feel' I want the cover to portray. I try to stick to simplicity and impact.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Okay, let's take them one at a time, even though I have many more:
Top of my list is Albert Einstein's Theory of Relativity. Quite apart from the amazing link it has to my death experience, it has helped me with a book that I am in the process of writing about the anomalies of time.
Second, is 'The Mote in God's Eye' by Larry Niven. It has great undertones to it, and I believe it carries a message for humanity for those who are paying attention.
Terry Pratchett is one of my favorite authors, and ALL his books have made a great impact on me, as it is clear to me that he knows a great deal about the workings of the Universe, even if he sets it out tongue in cheek. His characters are colorful and well developed. I especially like his character Death, which is quite funny, since I had a first hand experience with death myself.
'Illusions' by Richard Bach is also on my list of favorites as it liberated many questions I had about reality and how it affects us. This work of his became particularly important to me after my death experience, since clearly he was tapping into higher levels of understanding.
Another book that comes to mind is 'Supernature' by Lyall Watson. Again, ALL his work is fascinating and thought provoking, and certainly satisfies the philosopher in me!
What do you read for pleasure?
Mostly Science Fiction, but the good stuff like things written by Arthur C Clarke, Ben Bova, A E van Vogt, Robert Silverman... I could go on for a whole page here! This genre is to me an exercise in liberation of the mind. It is a playful, yet serious look at 'what if'.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I'm pretty much old school and love real books, but one has to move with the times, and I have found quite a few advantages from these technical advances in terms of book reading. I am certainly no authority on what's best, and have only had experience with one device.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Most of my published works have been in hard copy, where I have enjoyed considerable success with book signings. I have only recently moved towards epublishing, so this question would be best asked a year or so down the line.
Describe your desk
My desk is a standard PC desk, but I have a large office desk next to it which is piled with various works that I am busy with. A standard feature on my desk is my cup of coffee - need that to get my brain working!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up mainly in Hluhluwe Game Reserve in the wilds of Southern Africa. It most certainly had a great influence on my writing, as you will see if you keep your eye open for my forthcoming book entitled 'Whispers of Africa' as besides being an author, I am also an artist and I specialize in detailed wildlife as most of my subjects. The colourful characters that I came into contact with have also given me much in the way of inspiration when constructing characters for my SF short stories.
When did you first start writing?
A difficult question to answer, as I'm not sure that short compositions as a child count as writing. Suffice it to say that I have always penned ideas and thoughts around which I often develop longer stories. I guess I am genetically predisposed to writing, since it is something I am drawn to on a continuous basis.
