Interview with Raymond Laubert

Who are your favorite authors?
I think my favorite author is Clive Clussler. I also read everything from Dale Brown, Harold Coyle, Tom Clancy and lately have been reading Web Griffin.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I am retired and traveling around the country in a Class A motor home. I see new parts of the country whenever the area I am in gets boring. I haven't found any area yet that I haven't found enjoyable.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
My wife, Daisy, and I like to visit tourist areas. I am a people watcher. We also like to play Catan and Tickets to Ride. Often we will meet people and introduce them to the games.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Amazon is pretty good at telling me about new authors that are writing military fiction. I also have a list of maybe 20 authors that I follow. When they have a new book out I usually buy it.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I was a non-fiction writer before I turned my hand at fiction. My first book was Unlimited Platinum in Everquest. Everquest was a multi mega player fantasy game years ago.
What is your writing process?
I always started my non-fiction books with an outline. That is what I still use. But my latest fiction work has taken a life of its own and I have changed my outline to just be a general form I think the book might take.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The one I remember the most was Flight of the Old Dog. There are parts of that book that I still remember as if I was there. The area when they are flying a modified B-52 in the valleys with a Russian MIG firing missiles at them is still vivid.
How do you approach cover design?
Usually I see parts of the book that I think might make people want to read the book and try to express those to the artist. I do not do any drawing. I was never any good at art in school or college.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I use my cell phone most of the time. I do have a Kindle Fire, but find myself forgetting to bring it with me when I am in the car, which is were I read the most when traveling, shopping or eating out.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I am not a good marketer. I find just writing about the book, telling friends and family, promoting the book on twitter, Facebook and on my blogs works best. I don't spend a lot of money on marketing either.
Describe your desk
This is an easy one, the kitchen table and a laptop. I live in an Class A motor home so space is very limited.
