Interview with Rena Bullard

What is your writing process?
My writing process generally begins when my mind is at rest. I like to keep a pad and pencil on my nightstand so I can jot down ideas. Later in the day I flush out those ideas and craft them into something bigger. That's just the beginning.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I can remember the first author that impacted me; Judy Blume. I really enjoyed her books. There wasn't one book, in particular, that impacted me. What impacted me most was the ability to immerse myself in a story, become attached to characters, and actually miss them when the book ended. I loved that and still do.
How do you approach cover design?
I try not to be too literal. I like to place myself in the shoes of my reader and provide a cover I think they would like.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I enjoy teaching a class that is followed by a book signing. I enjoy teaching and meeting people.
Describe your desk
Neat & organized. I find it difficult to be creative among clutter.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was shy and introverted. Consequently, I spent many hours reading and eventually began writing short stories and plays.
What's the story behind your latest book?
D.I.Y. Color Confidence was written to help people overcome their fear of color. Many of my clients and friends would obsess over choosing colors. I wanted to give them a resource that would dispel all of their apprehensions about color. That's what D.I.Y. Color Confidence does; it gives readers color confidence.
