Interview with Rebecca Ryatt

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The excitement of creating characters, creating a situation, deciding what these characters do to one another. I unleash my imagination on them, and they come alive to me. It's thrilling. Creativity is magical.
What is your writing process?
I sit down, I come up with a character - could be female or male - and a scenario, and I start to write and see where the character takes me.
How do you approach cover design?
It has to be sexy and suggestive, of course. Not too blatant and coarse. It's about promising the reader something, teasing them with an image of what to expect inside the book.
What do you read for pleasure?
All sorts, from my own field, erotica, to erotic romance, straight romance, horror. I also read the Bible. I am not religious, though I am spiritual, and I find the Old Testament, in particular, spectacular in terms of imagery and language.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle at the moment, though I am looking at other devices.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I'm still trying to work this out. Erotica is niche, so you have to take care. I do use Twitter (please visit me there!), and I try to follow the advice of people like Mark Coker (Smashwords founder) and other writers.
Describe your desk
The kitchen table, a coffee, my laptop... and my imagination...
When did you first start writing?
At school.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
It is so difficult to get erotica published. There are not many routes you can follow. Indie publishing is the ideal platform for the kind of specialist material we erotica writers produce. I love eBooks, I love the eBook industry.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. Readers should be first and foremost in a writer's mind. I thank them quietly every day.
What are you working on next?
All sorts of naughty stories.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The smell of coffee.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I do a search for erotica on Amazon or Smashwords, find what's just out.
