Interview with Reeyce Smythe Wilder

Published 2015-09-14.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small island in the Caribbean. Think humid nights (and as hot as hell days!) with ocean breezes that smells of tropical fruit. Everything around me influences me in one way or another. I believe my culture is a passionate one, and so I express that passion through my writing.
When did you first start writing?
When my mom handed me my first Hardy Boys mystery book. I was nine. The first story I wrote was a complete rip-off of that novel. Lol!
What's the story behind your latest book?
Hmmm. I have a lot of "latest books" to be honest. I'm working on several currently. The most pressing is the completion of 'The Griswold Witch'. If you have already read 'The Sanction' then you're familiar with General Rhys. It's his story - the finding of his mate, the obstacles they face, the battles won and lost etc etc. My aim is to make it better than the last book.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Honestly, I had a hard time finding a literary agent to represent me. To be published professionally, an agent is vital, or at least that's my opinion. After a while I got tired of all the rejection letters. I've not given up, but it's my dream to have the world read what I write. There's something thrilling and addictive to seeing (or hearing) the rush of excitement in the words or expressions I see or read from readers who genuinely enjoy my work. For that alone, I decided why wait?
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
(Snort) I don't consider myself a success - yet. But Smashwords does a bang up job of "launching" new author, lemme tell ya. I'm happy for the platform to spread my wings. I can learn what the reader demands of me, and I can push my limits because of it.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Like I said - that rush of excitement the reader expresses. I have a few people who read my books before I even consider re-writing or editing or even publishing, and their eyes gleam, or they get this flustered look when their words are coming too fast for their brain to process, or they re-invent the entire story! It's like foreplay for me. I love it. So I work for it.
What do your fans mean to you?
Well, my fans are God-sent. They keep me centered - and humbled. Everyone who genuinely enjoys my work and take a few seconds of their time to comment keeps my alter ego fed - and eternally grateful. Without my readers...I wouldn't be.
What are you working on next?
"Next is relative". I have a western trilogy already planned - book one is almost completed. There's another supernatural series (angels, demons and all that's in-between), two historical romances - one Caribbean pirate, the other Nordic Viking, and a contemporary romance. I'm fighting my way through that because I'm discovering I might not be a contemporary gal.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
In my head, trying to figure out how to get out of a plot I've written myself into. If not I'm chasing behind my two kids and trying to manage an unmanageable husband.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I hunt the web like a lunatic. No lie.
