Interview with Rex Jacobs

Describe your desk
ha .. it is mostly quite well organised BUT I warn anyone who comes near it not to attempt tidying or shifting a thing ... I know where all the stuff is. Let's just leave it at that.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Having self published one book in hard print, I am now turning my attention to the online format, and am thinking it will prove a very handy vehicle to get the many short stories I have written over the years to a wider audience. It seems to be the way to dip one's toe in the water ....
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born and raised in Adelaide, South Australia, a city of over 1 mill people. I had the privilage of spending most of my school holidays and a sizable portion of my youth in and around a group of family farming properties, and have been greatly influenced by my Grandfather who had a unique intelligence and a marvellous insight into human nature.
When did you first start writing?
I took up writing seriously in the year 2000 when I had the privilage of transcribing my Grandfather's war diaries of the Somme. This lead to a series of poetry and then into the genre of short stories.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I have just published online two tales, both of them fiction, and quite different in content. Erica was influenced by a chance meeting with an old lady, and When Dead's not Quite was influenced by a serious road crash I had walked clear of some 20 years ago.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
It was high time I did something about the plie of manuscipts clogging up my computer. So here I go.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
That is yet to be determined ... but one must firstly believe in themself, and secondly have a go. My success or not will be entirely up to the readers, and of course my diligence in promotion. Smashwords seems an ideal fit to where I would like to go, and what I would like to acheive in the literary world
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
There are many joys of writing, and lots of great moments between the hours and hours of plonking at a keyboard, but I think the greatest joy of all is when a character of one's writing actually becomes a close friend. I have many such friends in my life, and have collated a story especially for them. I will publish that one when the rest have been presented.
What are you working on next?
I have five stories in various stages of completion which I will get to over the next several months. The immediate task is to do a final edit and then presentation of the 20 or so that are currently finished.
Who are your favorite authors?
Nan Witcomb started it all for me with her wonderful series of Nanushka. I also enjoy such aurthors as Bryce Courtney, Evan Green. Judy Nunn, Nicole Alexander, Di Morrissey, Phillipa Gregory and, from left field, the rare genius of Kurt Von Tojan.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
In a nut shell ...Life. What a wonderful thing it is to be given a fresh 'slate' every day. my poem below pretty much answers that question ......

A Special Book.

God gave me a book and a pen when I entered this world.
A book of endless pages, each one blank…he asked me to fill in one page for every day of my life.
He has given me so many bright colours to use, and so much beauty to inspire me…he has supplied me with so many friends to write about, and the freedom to go where I want, do what I want, and be who ever I wish to be.
He never questions the decisions I make, nor criticises my actions…in fact if I chose not to talk with him for years on end…he’s fine with that too.
I can write whatever I like, colour it how ever I like, and use whatever text and language I like.

This is no ordinary book though…for what I write today, can never be erased.
And what I wrote yesterday is open for all to read.
What I write tomorrow, is up to me…

I can’t turn to the last page and see how it finishes, and I can’t skip the boring parts, nor hide from the pain I might have created along the way.
I can’t sell this book, nor tear it up…it is the only copy available…I can’t hide it nor forbid anyone else to read its pages.

Only he knows how many pages it will fill, and when I’m done with this life, I must bring it along and place it on his library shelf.
I hope he likes the colours I used, and I hope he likes the things I wrote.
I hope I get another page to fill in tomorrow…and I pray I do it a little better.

R. Jacobs 2005.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Glass art fills a large portion of my life, and also my garden. Then there is always a coffee to be had with a friendor two, and my nikon and the native birds that share my space. Life is full.
