Interview with Kay Edwards

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love being able to put my imagination into words. I will look at total strangers and make up stories about them in my mind. I think we all love a happy ending, but I like to make up the story that gets to that ending.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have always loved writing stories and sharing them with my friends. Many of them were wondering why I had not tried to publish. After being encouraged and finding just the right characters to introduce myself, I decided to go for it. My first published book A Prelude to A Dance has a couple everyone is sure to enjoy. You will fall in love with Helen and Logan and hurt with them as they discover God's will in their lives.
Who are your favorite authors?
I love Lori Wick. I could read her books all day long. I think I own everyone of them. Francine Rivers is another one I enjoy. I love a story that takes you so deep you can't wait until you get out just to find out what happens.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
COFFEE!!! ...and my children of course. I love being a mom. My oldest two are now adults, but my youngest are still in the business of keeping me on my toes. The stuff that comes out of their mouths some days is pee your pants funny.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Atonement Child by Francine Rivers. It was so powerful and direct. I knew when I read that, I wanted to not only be fun when I wrote, but I wanted to be real. In the church we have some people that are really hurting. If I can find humor and mix it with healing, I know I can help people. It was humor that helped me deal with things I had kept a secret for years.
How do you approach cover design?
I like my covers to give you a hint. I want it to draw some emotion from you.
Describe your desk
My desk aka dinning room table is a hot red mess....I can't help it, organizing things is so much harder than organizing thoughts.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It has given me the chance to publish my very first book. I am excited to see all that this site has to offer.
What do your fans mean to you?
I would say that my fans do and will me a great deal to me. Right now my fans are my friends and family. I am very new to this and hope to make some new ones. I want to interact with them. If they want to see me tackle something in my next book or series, I want to hear it. I love finding new subjects to write about. If I can turn it into a story, I will.
What do you read for pleasure?
Inspirational and romance novels...no doubt about it. I love a good romance.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I still love my lap top. I do have a notebook, but I love my lap top.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I am just getting started. I really have not used any yet. I am getting ready to publish one book in a trilogy for free. I believe that my readers will love Helen and Logan so much they will want to keep tabs on them as they read about Tiffany and Toby. I think they will want to find out who Jody ends up with too. These three ladies are smart, funny and brave.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up along the Susquehanna River. I loved being in the country. We had neighbors, but we did not live in a town. Some things happen in areas like that. It has influenced my Susquehanna Trilogy for sure. Helen's plight is often kept a secret and I would love to give light to some of those secrets.
Now that you have the first book in your 'Crazy In Texas Series' out can, you give us a little idea of what to expect from these books?
This series will have you crying in some cases, but it will have you laughing more. I do some very deliberate things in this series. You will meet some very daring ladies, but you will also be challenged as a Christian to recognize that we are made to be attracted to each other. We are very accountable with how we conduct ourselves.
When you say that you are deliberate in addressing attraction, what does that mean?
I don't think we talk enough as Christians about a 'healthy' physical attraction to those we are dating. God made us to be drawn to each other physically. It is ok to address that and talk about it. If you don't teach your kids this, the world will.
You said that we need to be 'accountable'. What does that mean?
Being attracted physically is natural. It is how God made us. It does not mean that we just go with it and do what feels right at the time. It means that we make a deliberate choice to avoid putting ourselves in situations of compromise. We make a choice to not be alone with someone we are attracted to. We also make it a point to ask someone to hold us accountable. We need to surround ourselves with people that will call us out on sin.
What else can we expect from this series?
The other thing I address is the fact that it is ok for the young to seek the advice of those that are older. I put a few different scenes into the book that have this. I don't keep it simple either. I have the motherly figure in here talking to the women about everything from forgiveness to sex. Ooops I know. I said the 's' word, but it is true. We as Christians have got to start teaching and counseling on this, or like I said before, the world will. God had very specific and beautiful guidelines for sex, we need to show our youth the beauty in His design for this.
Wow! I guess that may raise some eyebrows. Your thoughts on how people will react?
Number one, I do not want people to think that I'm explicit with what I'm writing. None of what I write on this subject is vulgar or graphic. I would never do that. The things I write give a glimpse of what is going on without the detail. It is done with one purpose in mind, to show the beauty of waiting. It is also to show the downfall of not waiting. You can only give yourself away one time. You will never recapture the beauty of that. I believe that your purity is not yours to give to just anyone. It belongs to your future spouse. I do not see anything wrong with a man or a woman apologizing to their spouse for not waiting. In fact, I think they should.
You have mentioned we will be laughing. Can you give us a glimpse of the 'why' of that?
I can't lie on this one. I laughed when I wrote some of the stuff I have these ladies doing. My editors laughed too. I have taken these women and given them a very daring nature. I then deprived them of self control. They do an awful lot of thinking after the trouble is done, but not so much before.
Why should people read this series?
I would like to think the main reason is they will like it. I absolutely enjoyed inventing these characters. I believe that anyone reading about these characters, will not like the fact the series is over. They will feel like they are saying goodbye to friends.
