Interview with Richard Crane

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I work a lot, in fact, everyday. I love to watch movies with family and do model building.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was a short story about two people talking about how bad their fishing was going. The two ended up being the fish pulling humans under water.
What is your writing process?
First, I make a chapter list of the main parts. Then I develop character including there details, age, looks, habits, etc. Then I develop places, events and lines I would like to use. All of this is typed up and taped on the wall above the computer. You could say that the wall looks like a refrigerator that has been splattered by everyday notes, art and message boards.
How do you approach cover design?
I try to give a hint of what the story will lead them to, but twist the mind toward another direction.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Jaws-for the detail of the characters; Tatooine Ghost-bringing a lot of the star wars stories together; Q-Squared-A Star Trek novel that tied a lot of stories together as well; Christine-for the sheer horror; and Fix It Duck-my favorite children book to read to my Daughter.
What do you read for pleasure?
Star Wars books.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Describe your desk
Notes all over the wall of the book I'm writing at the time. To the left: a box of tissues, drink coaster, file cabinet. To the right; printer, desktop three stooges clock and picture of my dog.
When did you first start writing?
In high school
What's the story behind your latest book?
"Tainted" is about a college professor and his two best students who make a robot that looks and acts just like one of them. Then something goes wrong. It's not the ending that most people think.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords was introduced to me by another friend who uses Smashwords as well. Although my first novel, "The Sacrifice" is free, my next book will cost. I thought that I needed to make my first one free to give the people a chance to learn about my style without paying for it. I have not gotten any reviews yet even though I've had almost 200 people download it. Outside of close friends whom I've gotten reviews verbally, I'd really like to hear a strangers point of view.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Watching peoples reaction to the stories I created.
Who are your favorite authors?
Stephen King, Peter David, Troy Denning, Troy Taylor.
