Interview with Richard McMahon

When did you first start writing?
In 7th Grade. I was always good in Composition, and was often called on to read my opus to the class. I continued to write during my Army career, almost exclusively military and travel-related articles.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I enjoy hiking and hiking related travel. My favorite hiking areas are US national parks and monuments, the American southwest, The Alps, the Dolomites, and Nepal. I would love to through-hike the Pacific Crest Trail and the Via Alpina, but those projects are for a much younger me.
What do you read for pleasure?
I enjoy history and historical biographies, especially books that throw a new light on old interpretations. For light reading I enjoy mysteries and historical fiction.
Do you recommend first-time authors self-publish, or try conventional publishers?
An author who has written a good book (as judged by qualified individuals, not family or friends), should exhaust every avenue to conventional publication, including querying every publisher and every agent who deals with the book's genre. Only then, should he or she consider self-publication. There are almost one million books published every year. ONE MILLION! The chances of a self- published book surfacing in this vast ocean of ink are infinitesimal.
