Interview with G. S. Richter

When did you first start writing?
Pretty much as soon as I learned to hold a pencil.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in New England, surrounded by trees, a short drive from the ocean. This environment created the capacity for an intense hatred of the desert. Now that I live in the desert, I use that intense hatred as inspiration to write about anything other than the desert.
What is your writing process?
Coffee.
Describe your desk
My desk used to be a table covered in books, CDs and empty beer bottles. These days, my desk is a couch.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Dreaming of a world that, while still miserable, is somehow less miserable than the one in which we all have to live.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Music, writing, literature, film . . . although the mechanical act of actually exiting the bed is an automatic program I always seem to run whether or not I want to.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Angry that I'm not writing.
Who are your favorite authors?
Roberto Bolaño, Elfriede Jelinek, Jean-Phillippe Toussaint, Charles Bukowski, Hunter S. Thompson, Sergio De La Pava, and Michel Houellebecq.

Nihil’s Retina is a tragicomic roommate drama set in Outer Space. After the obliteration of Earth by a manmade black hole, the only survivors—an astronaut and his android pilot—hurtle through the void in a luxury model escape craft. A testimony of loss, madness, and conflicted cohabitation, Nihil’s Retina runs the math on the value of life after the end of the world and comes up just shy of zero.
