Interview with RoAnna Sylver

What drives you to write?
Having a story in me that needs to come out. It feels like really needing to sneeze or pee. Really uncomfortable until it’s down on paper (or a screen). The necessity for marginalized people to see themselves well-represented fiction.  And honestly - sweet words from readers, family and friends. I've gotten a lot more than I even expected and I can't begin to say 'thank you' enough. <3
How do you stay focused on building your world when writing a novel?
I try to take several looks at it as if I’m looking at it for the first time and then think of questions I’d ask, things that wouldn’t make sense if I was seeing it initially. Sometimes it’s practical things like “where do they get water?” Sometimes it’s an obvious, glaring thing like “how does being trapped in this place for ten years make them feel?” Sometimes it’s a smaller thing like an unexpected way a character feels about another one. I’m always finding out new things.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Do you have a writing ritual? If so, what is it?
Wait until the world is silent and dark, slipped below the soft veil of the nightsong. Burrow into a blanket. Take all appropriate medications. So many medications (I have a ton of chronic health problems, and often debilitating pain). Bask in warm glow of computer monitor. Do not be distracted by the glorious siren song of the internet. Put a word in front of the other. Do the thing. Now I’m writing.
