Interview with Brino Ghartornni

What do your fans mean to you?
They know more about my work than I do.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The control, precise to the comma, and the surprise of the characters or plot-lines taking on a life of their own.
The tension in laying out sufficient information for the reader, whilst providing enough room for she and he to meet me half way.
What are you working on next?
The finishing touches to the sequel, called 'The Face Of The Deep'. I did not want to write 'more of the same', although a number of familiar characters are centrally placed. I wanted to explore some of their personal mysteries and the book has become an adventure story rather than a conventional police procedural.
Who are your favorite authors?
Olaf Stapledon for his scale of vision, Kurt Vonnegut for his humour and Stanislaw Lem for his complexity.
And Saki.Oh, and Julian Barnes.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The sun seeming to come up over the horizon.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Clearing trees, composing music, swimming underwater, film editing, the usual kind of stuff.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I used to listen to radio reviews or read articles, but lately I have bought books on the basis of them being 'award winning' and have been severely disappointed, so now am rather wary of anything other than personal recommendation.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, but I do not know what interest it would be to anyone to describe what it was. Aged about twelve, the writer's delight struck me for the first time for a teacher pleasing line I can still recall, ahem! " The ruffled brow of the lake reflected my own consternation.." How very 19th cent.
