Interview with Beth Stern

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
My mother had a friend who was an editor with Woman's Own and this friend saw me writing a story about girls on the Underground train and what they were thinking. The friend said the story was good and I should send it to Woman's Own. It wasn't accepted but the editor said I had a good future in creative writing. I was about 8 years old then
My writing process begins with a character
For example the story I am working on today is a teen adventure story.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
It was the Princess and the Pea.
How do you approach cover design?
I approach cover design by means of photographs
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I particularly enjoy Martina Cole crime books such as 'Family', Faceless, The Runaway, but I also enjoyed 'Fifty Shades Of Grey. and the Harry Potter books
What do you read for pleasure?
I !read for pleasure anything which might interest me at the time - such as a Martina Cole book or a Mandasue Heller
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I haven't got around to reading ebooks in a device because I am not very tech minded yet . Age is a problem!
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I have just begun on Facebook and I think this will be quite effective
Describe your desk
My desk comprises a lap top and a pile of books being used for the present book that I am working on
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in London and the war influenced my writing
When did you first start writing?
I have written for as long as I can remember
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is a teen adventure and I am trying to combine Spanish and English and hopefully help teens enjoy and learn Spanish. My partner and I spend a good deal of the year in Spain
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Headline published some books for me but I wanted to be more independent in my publishing and Smashwords seemed to be the ideal way to do it.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I only started last Saturday but I want to do all kinds of books to see which suits my writing better.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
To see my book in print and on the shelf
