Interview with Robert Osborn

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small southern town in northeast Louisiana. A rural area where outdoor activities and farming are the norm. I was an avid reader as a child with a very real imagination and wanted to write as a young man but work always seemed to interfere. I can't say that where I grew up influenced my writing but It didn't hurt me either.
When did you first start writing?
My first attempt at writing was in November of 1986. I started writing my first draft with an ink pen and later continued with a typewriter. The story still sits in it's original form, still unfinished in a place on the corner of my desk, a reminder of something I want and need to do.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It is unfinished since 1986 and still sits on my desk as a reminder of something I need to finish.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I enjoy working around the house. Gardening, landscaping and building or fixing things as they need doing. As my home is new to me and my family, not a new house but a nice little country house, there is lots to do.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Just knowing that I have another day of living. Another day with my wife and time for writing.
What do you read for pleasure?
Science fiction and fantasy. I really like anything that has dragons but I most like to see what other writers have to say in print.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
For pure reading pleasure and ease of use, I use a Ipad. I also have the kindle app on my computer and will use it if it's more convenient at the time.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
My reading preferences are set with the book sellers like Amazon through kindle. They send me prompts regarding books I have read and books that I might be interested in. I also follow other indie authors on facebook and twitter and will often find inspiration for reading material there.
Describe your desk
My desk is the center of clutter, the stopping place for all sorts of things, including my cats feed bowl. Fortunately, I have a very large desk and can still find a place for my stuff.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The freedom to write and publish my story at my pace. I am not forced to kill my ideas simply because a book agent somewhere didn't have the time or need to read my stories.
What are you working on next?
Currently I am editing and preparing more stories in the Chronicles of the Shadow Prince. The still unfinished first story is also on the list of things to do next.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is a spin off for my main character from the four book series "Seeds of Eden." His story and life have taken a major change and the young man who started out on a mission to save planet Earth. A prophecy finds him being sent to another realm to save a princess thus becoming a prince.

More prophecies foretelling his coming are coming to light and the final change occurs. One he had no say in. A life change making him the latest Shadow Prince about to start his own thousand year reign. The stories will be told in the series "Chronicles of the Shadow Prince"
Who are your favorite authors?
My favorite authors are too many to name and most of them are indie authors. I like to read their books, looking for a new or different angle on the many stories being written out there.
What is your writing process?
Mostly, I will think of a plot for a story and sit down and start writing it. Most of the time, the story line flows and I am able to write the story. If I don't finish it right away, I will mentally store it for later. Occasionally the twists and turns of the story will keep me awake some nights forcing me to get on with it. If I am left alone, I will write between three and ten thousand words a day.
How do you approach cover design?
My cover designs are directly related to the story or the stories characters. All my book covers till now have been painted by my wife and used as the cover design for the books.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is the driving force that helps indie writers succeed in getting their stories to the readers. This is my first book with Smashwords but it won't be my last.
