Interview with Robert Rand

What are your optimal working conditions?
When you consider that I wrote the majority of my manuscripts while incarcerated, I am able to write almost anywhere as long as I have a pen and paper. I am now writing directly on the computer, which is much easier, but my desk is rickety and small, located in our bedroom and in poor light.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Yorba Linda, California. It is a bedroom community in North Orange County. It was a place that people thought was safe. Unfortunately for me, it wasn't safe. I was beaten, raped and left for dead by a neighbor when I was ten years old. That trauma led to my drug addiction, which led to my incarceration, which years later, led to my writing. Everything happens for a reason I am told. But I think that is just something people say when they can't find anything meaningful to say. I am happy in my life today, But I would drop that horror as a child if I could.
When did you first start writing?
I began fiddling around with writing in about 1990 while in prison. The books that we had to read were in such disrepair that most were missing a good portion of the endings. I would write my own endings to whatever book I had and attach it to the book before passing it on to the next guy. I received quite a bit of praise for my imaginative twists to the books we had all read over and over again.
What's the story behind your latest book?
This latest book is the first time I am collaborating with another writer. I am very fortunate to have a writer as talented as Mike Wells to be my partner. He has brought my skills to an entirely different level and taught me a great deal about th process of writing.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
After completing my first manuscript in 2000, the writing bug was in me. I made the typical hundreds of attempts to find an agent, without success. Now, its like, to hell with them. I know that I have a good story, I publish it myself, and I don't have to grovel with an agent who takes a chunk of the money.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Finding answers to my personal problems. I am able to give any issue to a character and allow the character to resolve the problem then apply it to my own life. Cheaper than therapy.
