Interview with Robert D. Vaughan

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My dogs nagging me to get them their breakfast; my first cup of coffee; and rejoining my imaginary friends on their ongoing adventures in a place I call 'Waimea'.
What is your writing process?
I have ideas flying about at random all the time. Some I jot down, others I just file away in my brain for the future. I have key plot points in mind and often put them in order of appearance- a loose version of an outline. Then, I just write. The story plays out in almost cinematic fashion- action, dialogue, sights, smells, etc.The joy of writing for me is the spontaneity of the experience. Stuff comes from who knows where and more often than not I just go for it. I love the poetical nature of my writing, and savor each phrase as I put it into place. Afterward, I come to my senses and with a heavy sigh I go through and edit, embellish or eliminate, depending on the need.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
My wife and I just purchased a 1920 craftsman house, and I spend most of my time away from writing fixing and renovating 94 years of really questionable choices. If time permits or the muse strikes, I paint watercolors of local landscapes.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I am a sci-fi fan of the old stuff- Asimov, Heinlein, Poul Anderson, Edgar Rice Burroughs and the like. I like the style of writing of the earlier writers and am overly fond of Michener. I don't actually read much, since so much of my brain activity is shunted into writing stories of all genres- novels (I have about a dozen others in various stages of development), screenplays, and a textbook on the art and craft of the Entertainment Industry titled 'No Art Required'.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
'Breakfast of Champions' by Vonnegut. I was in ninth grade, had a massive crush on my English teacher, and would have eaten razor blades if she asked. Little did I know she used her influence widely to instill a love of literature in immature and hormonal young men. I thank her every day for her gift.
How do you approach cover design?
I have an extensive Art background. I was a Designer and Artist for Theater, Film and Television in my former life and have a fair degree of facility with modern graphic design. I use a basic edition of Photoshop and create my covers myself. Each cover is usually a singularly striking image, and then I add just a bit of this and that to convey the feeling of the book within.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Oddly enough, my phone.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I'll get back to you on that after I am successful.
What do you have in store for the New Year?
Firstly, I am rolling out my third installment of 'Over the Rainbow' Book Three - 'A Tapestry of Ohana' in monthly installments. Each month a new episode will be published on my website, and the following month it will be replaced by the next one. The finished book will be released on Christmas Day, 2016. Also, I am developing another book, this one inspired by conversations with a friend, and published under a pseudonym. It is a totally different genre than 'Rainbow', but one that is quite popular today.
