Interview with Robin Hopper

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
To experience new things, new thoughts and new ideas - and pass them along to others.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
London, England - during World War II. This one-of-a-kind childhood (being bombed on a daily basis for the first six years of my life) set me up for an amazing life. That amazing life is what has influenced my writing as well as everything that I have done since childhood.
What other books have you written?
I have written six other books - five on the technical aspects of ceramics and one on the business aspects of being an artist.
How did travel impact your writing?
Travel is the biggest eye-opener for the observer and the artist. It opens the eyes and mind to the fantasies of the world.
Why did you start writing?
I started writing because there was a need for expertise in the area of ceramics.
What influence did working backstage in the theatre have on you?
Working in theatre gave me the opportunity to explore many similar subjects - stage design is very similar to garden design. As a garden designer, I used my theatre experience to make the house and garden into one large fantasy - both visual and imaginary.
Who would this book appeal to?
Anybody who is interested in other people's journey through life - including artists, gardeners, painters, printmakers, visual and theatre arts enthusiasts and anyone with an inquiring mind.
As an educator, what is your primary direction?
Giving people the experiences and knowledge to visual the seventy-five years of life that I've had and the things that I have done during that time. As a non-stop knowledge junkie, I've worked in different directions and like to pass that on for other people's benefit.
