Interview with Robin Lockwood

When did you first start writing?
In my mid-twenties, but with a long break until my mid-thirties when I took it up again. I didn't try to publish anything for compensation until my mid-40's.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first decent story I ever wrote was "Seduced into Obedience" - in my mid-20's when I was super bored one day and thought I could write a story as decent as the one I just read, and a bit edgier rather than so tame. It's been through numerous edits since.
What is your writing process?
I like to write in bulk and then come back and edit it three or four times after letting a few days go by each time. Writing improves, in my mind, after each additional edit. When the improvements start to get small is when I think about finishing the editing process. The first draft is to get the ideas down. Subsequent drafts are often to tighten the writing to keep it focused on action, and then draw out that action to a reasonable extent.
Who are your favorite authors?
I read a lot of science fiction both novels and short stories. I also enjoy war stories of almost any type: Napoleonic, Modern War, King Arthur, Roman and Byzantine.
How do you approach cover design?
Sex sells! I want the cover to be attractive and inviting, not a turnoff. I want it to hint at what's inside, good stories - edgy stories - about sex - where fantasy can be explored because it's fantasy, not reality.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Family is what motivates me to do as well as I can day to day.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Boredom! Combined with an idea that I thought might be fun to write about. When the results didn't go anywhere, I didn't do anything with it. But if the resulting story seemed like it might be exciting for a small subset of people to read, I kept it and improved it.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Most of my stories focus on initial reluctance followed by enthusiasm (for edgy sex). Odds are that if I'm writing something new, that is what I'll be exploring.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Getting feedback is the real joy. That means somebody has read your work and either liked it enough (or disliked it enough) to be moved to say something about it. Since I write about edgy sex where there is often initial reluctance or distaste, it can be offensive. It's always interesting to write such a tale, describe it properly to warn people what they're getting into and then get feedback from somebody that doesn't like the subject matter!
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first work that really made an impression on me was a work on the history of naval warfare from ancient times through the period of English dominance and how control of the waters enable control of the land. It really made an impression on me and taught me that things could be learned through independent reading. I remember I was in the fifth grade, for whatever reason.
