Interview with Rod Allan Stone

Published 2014-03-11.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a community called Lively. Just west of Sudbury. How did it influence me? It's where I got my start as a bouncer. I won't name the place, but it was at one of the city's more popular night spots. In fact, one of the main characters in the series is inspired by one of my best friends, who worked with me at that club.
When did you first start writing?
As far back as I can remember I was writing stuff. Anything from goofy little poems to trying to create my own comic books.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story is complete fiction. However, the main characters are inspired by real life friends and coworkers from over the years. When I got serious about writing this series, the idea for the first book just popped into my head.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Just being able to do things my own way and in a style that was relatable to my target audience. You know, for example, things like the dialogue used by the characters. It's how my coworkers and I actually speak to one another.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has given me the platform I needed to get this kind of story out there. Hopefully the readers will enjoy it. Truthfully, that's what will make me happy.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The ability to express my thoughts. I visualize everything I write as I write it. I write the story as though I'm writing a script in a way. It's an unbelievable feeling.
What do your fans mean to you?
If and when I have any fans that is. Fans are the key to success obviously. Without them, I'm only writing for myself.
What are you working on next?
I am currently working on book two in the Iron Sin series. The ongoing saga of Mason Powers and the lads from the Iron Sin Parlor.
Who are your favorite authors?
Lee Child first and foremost. I am a huge fan of the Jack Reacher novels. W.E.B. Griffin, Dan Mahoney, Brian Harper, Stephen King and Dean Koontz are other favourites
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm with my kids a lot. Working my "nightjob" at the club. Cheering on my Flyers.
What is your writing process?
I have a routine. I usually sit at he same coffee shop, in the same seat and just write the story as it comes to me. I always have a general idea of what the basic plot is though.
