Interview with Ronald D Thompson

Published 2018-03-08.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The plot is quite complicated, involving many different worlds and alien species. Earth in Torment is the first book in a series which follows the protagonist Robert Stave, who hails from the year 2218, when Earth is an alien battlefield. He travels back in time in a quest to alter the events of the past to save our future.
When did you first start writing?
I have considered writing a novel for the past 10 years but only took the plunge in December 2016.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
With the upsurge in indie authors and the challenges to have your voice heard by traditional publishers, it was quite an easy decision to become an indie author. The biggest influence to chose this path was probably as a result of listening to Mark Dawson's podcast interviews.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy is being lost in your own world when you write, time passes so quickly.
What are you working on next?
I am already working on the next in the series to follow my debut novel Earth in Torment. It's interesting because my characters are developing well and I am enjoying the twists and turns of the interaction between aliens and our own species.
Who are your favorite authors?
By far my favourite author is John Grisham, his story telling is remarkable. I also enjoy Ken follet and Dan Brown amongst others again for their story telling and attention to detail. In my genre Philip K Dick is king.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
To see where the story I am currently working on, will take me next.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
We like to visit the coast, go for walks on the beech. Other than the coast my wife and I like to travel. Our son is studying at Edinburgh University and we have adopted the city as our second home.
What is your writing process?
I write on an evening. I sit at the same place with my laptop and usually listen to some inspiring music on my headphones, either Rachmaninov, Mike Oldfield or a compilation of motivational music e.g. music from the movie Gladiator.I usually write between 1,000 - 2,000 words a night, most days.
