Interview with Ronnie Dauber

How do you approach cover design?
I have a dear friend who specializes in creating book covers, so I give her my ideas and she creates the cover. However, very few of my ideas have worked out, and after learning what the book is about, Mishel McCumber creates a dynamic cover that is perfect! She has done the covers for all of my inspirational books, and I have created the ones for my non-fiction novels. Clearly, Mishel is the one with the talent for design.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I am a Chrisitan who loves God and I love to learn about God—the deep things of God. So the book I read daily and the one I study daily is the Bible. However, I do read books from Rabbi Jonathan Cahn because his insight into Bible prophecies in relation to Scripture is amazing. I also read books by Paul Wilbur who teaches about the heart of God. And I read books by Billy Graham and Ron Cantor, as well. I read these because they are men of God who believe as I do; however, I'm very leery about reading any of the new age Christianity books.
What do you read for pleasure?
As a Christian, my interests are in things that talk about God, so the Bible is my favorite book. But I also read books by Ron Cantor and Jonathan Cahn who teach the deep things of God.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing poems and short stories as a child, and when I was 12-years old, I won a community poetry competition for my submission about President John F. Kennedy. It was typeset and sent to the Whitehouse; I have no idea what they did with it. I have since written many poems and short stories, some of which have been published, as well as 18 books.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The last book that I published was the sixth and final book in The Crown Series, which is a collection of Bible Heroes that helped to save the nation of Israel. I realized that in studying the Bible and focusing on these men and women, I was drawn close to the heart of God. I was inspired to write these books because I love to share the truth about God with others, and I thought this would be a great way for people to discover the character of God, through the heroes who gave their lives to serve Him. I wrote this series in a storybook format so that readers could walk in the shoes of each hero and get a better understanding of their lives and their purpose.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The first few books that I wrote were published through an on-demand publishing company, and after spending thousands of dollars, I realized that all they did was typeset and print my books; editing was extra and then not done professionally. I paid to have some of them marketed, and was very disappointed in the results due to oversights on their part. When I couldn't get the control of the price of my books, and when I knew they weren't being marketed, I decided to just study up on the process, perfect it, and do it myself. It has been a long journey of learning by trial and error, but I am determined to publish my books in the most professional way possible.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has taught me professionalism. There is only one way to publish a book that is acceptable and to do that, I had to learn how to do it professionally. When I started with Smashwords a few years ago, I began to realize that I didn't need to pay thousands of dollars to a company that offered no help whatsoever, when I could do it myself. It wasn't easy because I had no idea what I was doing, but Smashwords has easy instructions and available support at all times. And as well, it offers an amazing market for authors and gets the books to many reputable online retail stores.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing allows me to express what's in my heart. Through my inspirational books, I am able to share the love of God with others and hopefully, bring them into a closer understanding and relationship with Him. As for my fiction novels, they are fast-paced and action-packed, and they allow me to experience an exciting outdoor adventure. In real life, I suffer from a physical disability that doesn't allow me to run or walk or enjoy the great outdoors as I'd like to, so my books give me that little bit of freedom; although, I don't think I'd want to endure what my character, Sarah Davies, went through in that series. I can do without that much excitement.
What do your fans mean to you?
When I publish an inspirational book and see that someone has purchased a copy, I am thrilled because then I know that they will read about the love of God and that through that book, they will be blessed. So it means everything to me when someone reads what I have written. And when a person reads one of my novels, I'm also thrilled because I know that people like to read fiction, and my fiction books are free of profanity, sexual content, and insolence. I believe that a good book can be a page-turner without that in them. There are many books on the market today that are filled with corruption, and I know that the characters in the books help to develop the character of young readers, and this is why I wrote the Sarah Davies series, to give young adults an exciting but clean adventure story.
What are you working on next?
I am currently writing a book called, Jesus Saves. This is a devotional book that breaks down into titles many of the issues that people don't realize Jesus already conquered for them. Most Christians are aware that Jesus took their sins away when He died on the cross, but they continue to live defeated lives as they struggle through the trials of this world. For example, depression. I talk about it a bit and then provide biblical examples and many Scriptures that will help readers to know that Jesus has already given them the ability to overcome it and live in peace and joy. I want readers to know that when the world says you can't, Jesus says you can!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Every day is a new day that offers many blessings. Seven years ago, I fought a nasty bout with cancer, and in the world's eyes, I lost, as they gave me only five months to live. However, God said in Exodus 15:26 that He is the God that heals us. And so I put my faith in Him, and He healed me. Every day for me is an opportunity to live and share His love with others. Every morning that I rise is one that the world said I wouldn't have, but God is greater than the world, and He continues to give me new days. And for that I'm grateful and I'm excited to rise and live each one!
