Interview with Rory Z Fulcher

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love to share my experience with hypnosis with likeminded individuals, so that I can help other people to enjoy and benefit from hypnosis as much as I do. Writing is a great way of doing this, as I can be really succinct and nail down my points as cleanly as possible, as opposed to videos and face-to-face, where sometimes I can go off on tangents! lol
What do your fans mean to you?
I never really think of myself as having fans, more like friends and colleagues. We're all in this industry together and it's great to feel a part of something bigger, so it's great to have that feeling of friendship with my readers and people that follow all of my stuff on YouTube etc. I love to hear positive feedback and how my work has helped other people to improve their own, so to answer the question, it means a lot that people value what I do and I love to hear from such people! :-)
What are you working on next?
This year (2018) I've released 2 new books, 'Hypno-Fasting', a book on losing weight using hypnosis and intermittent fasting and the 'Stage & Street Hypnosis Handbook' an amazingly thorough guide to doing comedy hypnosis. Next? Well, I'm planning on releasing masses of online training videos over the next few years and I'm also intending to step up my 'hypnotherapy MP3' game, and get some more of those out there! Keep 'em peeled!
Who are your favorite authors?
My favourite authors are Stephen King, Douglas Adams, Dean Koontz, Dennis Wheatley, and a plethora of other sci fi and horror writers. In terms of hypnosis and hypnotherapy books, I've read far and wide. There are tonnes of great books out there by many different authors (new and old), with different approaches and nuggets of information. If I had to pick one, it'd have to be anything by (or relating to) Milton H Erickson!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The grind! Being self-employed as a hypnotist, trainer and author, you have to be very self-motivated. I never thought I was, until I ditched the 9-5 job and started to work for myself. Turns out, I'm a pretty tough boss to work for! lol!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing, I spend my time teaching hypnotherapy, stage & street hypnosis and rapid inductions, mainly in London, but also across the world. You can sometimes find me over in Las Vegas at the HypnoThoughts convention doing just that! Otherwise, I love to cook, lift weights, partake in red wine and cheese evenings and watch comedy movies!
What is your writing process?
My writing process, I think, is pretty simple. As it's all non-fiction (thus far), I get an overall 'idea' for what I want the book to cover. I then write out the contents list and break it down into as many sub-contents as I feel are required... Then I copy this list and put each header on a new page and start ploughing away. I will frequently write, re-write, re-re-write, proof, second proof, scrap, re-write again until I get something right. The more books I've written, the more discriminating I've grown with my writing. If I went back and edited my first book now, I'm sure I'd probably end up re-writing the whole thing... Now I think of it, I may have to do that some time! lol, thanks Smashwords for making more work for me! :-p
How do you approach cover design?
Initially I designed my book covers myself on photoshop, as all I wanted was something relatively simple (a coloured spiral), which worked fine. However, upon releasing more books, I decided that getting covers designed a little more professionally would probably give a nicer overall effect. I gave a designer on 'Fiverr' a brief idea of what I wanted for my Hypno-Fasting cover, and they came back to me with an awesome cover design and my new book also has a much more modern, professional cover too. Depending on your budget, there are tonnes of options and you don't even need to be that creative in order to get a really good cover designed!
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
To market my books, the number one thing has been facebook ads actually. It's about initially building up sales and reviews, and sure, you need to spend some money initially in order to get your book out there, but once it's done, the sales tend to start levelling out and becoming naturally more consistent.
Describe your desk
Most of my writing (of my new books) has been done at my dining room table and with my laptop connected to my bluetooth soundbar (gotta have some tunes on). Occasionally when my house is busy (such as in the school holidays), I head to the local coffee shop and take up one of their tables for a few days a week. When I'm in writing-mode, I need to have as few interruptions as possible, as I get into a 'flow', so it's good to have a couple of options for places to write!
