Interview with Phillip Tingle

Describe your desk
My desk is a simple table designed to support a laptop. It faces out a large window with a west view of farmland. Thick curtains allow work to go on in the later afternoon although I prefer to write in the morning. My Jack Russel terrier often naps under my desk while I'm working.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
My home town is about 30 miles from Indianapolis. It is in a farming area and also has a manufacturing base. Many residents commute to jobs in Indianapolis. Growing up I heard many stories from the local lore. What fascinated me was how the stories were structured and the delivery or style of the storyteller. I stored these techniques for future use.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It is saga of wealth seized from the victims of the Holocaust. Nefarious characters move it from place to place until its last hiding place becomes unknown for over seventy years. Then information is uncovered that prompts rival groups to seek it with intimidation and violence. Finally justice prevails.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
At this point I've not developed a reader base yet, but hope to do so soon. Smashwords has provided a means of reaching a large audience through self publishing.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Plotting the story line is the greatest joy. Characterizations are also rewarding. I want my bad folks to be really evil and my good folks really virtuous
What do your fans mean to you?
Not having earned any fans yet, I can only say that my goal is to produce work that genuinely entertains those who choose my books.
What are you working on next?
My next effort is thriller involving a private spacecraft launch company that is the target of plot by a terrorist group.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I love life. It has its joys and its sad times and to get the most out it you must live it to the fullest each day. Inspiration is in the challenges and rewards of each day.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
My wife and I are together most of the time. We enjoy gardening, cooking, being with friends, and travel.

I also read extensively on many subjects, go the gym regularly, ride my bicycle, and walk/jog with our Jack Russel terrier.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Usually Amazon.com, but now I've discovered Smashwords direct sales.
