Interview with Connie Lingus

Published 2018-11-07.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes. I was six years old when I read The Berenstain's B Book. You know, the one with the huge pink letter "B" on the front cover with a picture of the Cat in the Hat in the upper right corner. I loved this book so much that every time I rode my bicycle I'd recite "big brown bear blue bull beautiful baboon blowing bubbles biking backwards". I never recited the part that came next, "bump" and "BAM" because there was no way I was going to allow myself to lose control! I had already experienced enough childhood trauma that was beyond my control and vowed to never allow those things to happen to me again. Somehow, some way, all of the negative childhood experiences managed to unlock my internal creativity. In any case, this book and others like it are expressions of my inner child's various coping mechanisms; moreover, a significant aspect of my healing process.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Growing up, I had a very exotic look. People would always assume that I was mixed with Indian or some other race. Since I was a free-spirit and guys were intrigued by my looks, all the extra attention I received caused people to label me as promiscuous. When in reality, I was only just a tomboy. This inspired me to write a series chronicling my various experiences as a person everyone seemed to love to hate.
What type of genre do you read for pleasure?
Funny that you'd ask. It really depends on my mood regarding the type of genre I read. I prefer to read books within a mixture of genres like finance, biography, sci-fi, romance, and spirituality. I love to explore different genres because they all represent various expressions of the mind. You won't believe this, but I also get pleasure in reading "How to" books. I love to learn new things.
What was the basic process for publishing your ebook?
It took me about a year to write my book and another three months for editing. Then, I found my book cover designer, Sharon Grant (A-Star Designs) of TheBookCoverDesigner.com, from Mark's List on the Smashwords' website. Afterwards, I purchased a few ISBN numbers for the different platforms (soft cover, PDF ect.), and copyrighted my manuscript. After reading through the Smashwords Style Guide and viewing a few tutorials, I formatted and uploaded my manuscript as an MS Word document into the Meatgrinder where it converted my document into the multiple eBook formats. These eBook formats are all supported by Smashwords. Finally, Smashwords allowed me to choose my distribution channels and the rest is history!
How do you approach cover design?
I used Mark's list of recommended cover designers. These designers are talented and very reasonable. Try it!
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Actually, I decided to test the market with word of mouth and free of charge on SmashWords in order to create a buzz. After a few years, I will add the rest of meat to my book series and sell it through various eBook channels, including SmashWords. Although I can market my books on social media, I'd rather leave it to the professionals in order to effectively reach my target markets.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords contributes to my success as an indie writer by making it easy to publish, promote and distribute my books. They offer a host of tutorials and instructional eBooks at no charge that can help newbies or any level writer become successful. I personally like the seamless conversion of my manuscript from a simple Microsoft Word document to just about all of the eBook platforms available on the market. Really cool feature!
What do your fans mean to you?
I know this may sound cliche, but my fans mean the world to me. My upcoming blogs will allow them to express how they feel about certain characters in the book or even their life experiences without feeling embarrassed or ashamed. The blog is only for like-minded individuals who can identify with particular characters.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on two other books. I will be adding more content to "Not A Whore - Sex without guilt" and will also be releasing Volume 2 "Not A Whore - I am Twonnie" in 2019! All characters will be updated with more twists, turns, and surprises. And just maybe... you may learn another tidbit of magic from our mystery girl.
