Interview with S.A. Meyer

What is your writing process?
I always get a scene first, or a vague idea, that just pops into my head at the most random of moments. I start with that scene/ idea and I go from there.
Describe your desk
I recently acquired my old childhood desk which also belonged to my sister when she was a kid. I fixed it up and painted it "plum" and "sea foam green". My desk itself if cluttered. Oh my God so cluttered! Notebooks stacked on my printer that is just barely holding onto the ledge. A hutch overflowing with books and my Nook. A pair of speakers hooked up to my laptop, music constantly booming out of them. A cup full of pens and mechanical pencils is stuck in the corner. And I've already created a water stain on the only free spot from all my cups of coffee and tea.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I think so. I was six years old and instead of doing my schoolwork (foreshadowing, anyone?) I was writing about a boy and girl who shrunk down to Thumbelina size and started to jump on flowers.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a not so great part of town. My dad didn't like me playing outside because he thought all the neighborhood kids were bad influences so I stayed inside a lot. I read all the time, and reading other people's stories quickly led to me writing my own.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading, reading, reading. At the beach, in my room, at my local book store. Anywhere there are books or where I can bring my own, I'm reading. Music is a requirement as well, although volume does fluctuate.
How do you approach cover design?
It has to be eye catching first of all. With a million other books jumping for a reader's attention, I want mine to stand out. I try to make it like a movie poster. It gives you an idea of what's going on within the pages, but it makes you want to read it all the more.
What do you read for pleasure?
Everything! But that's not a fair answer is it? The barest I can break it down is that I read more fiction than non-fiction. Other than that my tastes are all over the map.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Nook myself, but if there's a book/ series that I am particularly in love with I bite the bullet and buy a physical copy.
