Interview with Stephanie Kekeocha

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, I was very young. I think in 2nd or 3rd grade. It was a story about a family of eagles who lived in a tall tree. One of the younger eagles was scrawny and didn't know how to fly yet and therefore teased by his siblings. One day he fell from the nest, and the family was sure he had died. However, they didn't know because the tree they lived in was so tall that you could not see the ground. Anyway, months pasts and for some reason, they were to the group and found that the scrawny baby eagle was not only alive but had become king over the animals on the ground surrounding the tree.
What is your writing process?
I don't really have a process per se, but I can say I start with an idea. After my idea, I decide how to convey it, whether fiction or non-fiction, creatively or directly. This decision is based on whether my goal is to teach or simply inspire. Whichever way I choose based on my initial idea, I jot down my basic thoughts and then "sense" any and everything connected to that feeling or idea. When I do this, I get pictures, feelings, and ideas that I try my very best to put into words. I know this "sensing thing" might sound confusing, and I actually have a hard time explaining it. The best way I can explain it is by asking you to imagine the center of an onion bulb. Now, imagine that bulb as my idea or feeling. Then, imagine me observing the onion-like a puzzle and adding the outer pieces or layers as I figure out where they fit around the bulb. Those pieces are what I attempt to put into words. I hope my explanation makes some sense.
How do you approach cover design?
Similar to anyone, I think. I start with an idea or feeling and add images that seem to convey that. Then, I keep tweaking it until I am satisfied that it matches my initial feeling or idea.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I don't really have a favorite book outside of the Bible. I love to read all kinds of things. As long as they make me think beyond my own imagination and add another layer to my onion, I like it. Since so many books have done this for me, it's hard to have a favorite.
What do you read for pleasure?
I don't really read for pleasure. I read to learn.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle
Describe your desk
Neatly organized
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Chicago, but I am not sure it has influenced my writing significantly. Instead, my writing has always been influenced by and even a reflection of my inability to accept things at face value. I have always been trying to see behind the veil ever since I was a little kid.
What's the story behind your latest book?
As I mentioned in the previous question, I have always been trying to find real answers to life's questions. I was never satisfied with the face value of things and wanted to know the truth. This is what drew me to God. It is also what made me ask God lots of questions that he answer. My latest book is some of the answers God gave me to the questions that I asked him.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
It was too difficult to get traditional publishing.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The sense of connection I feel with God, the release and clarity I feel in my spirit, and sharing these things with others.
