Interview with Samantha Terrell

What do you read for pleasure?
Since my poetry is, in large part inspired by current events, reading news from a variety of sources helps me stay abreast of social issues around the world. In addition, I've always enjoyed theology and biographies. I read a variety of poetry, both contemporary and classic.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
For many years, I only marketed my work by word-of-mouth and an old-school blog. I evolved with the times, and used sites such as MySpace and Facebook, until it became seemingly ineffective. Currently, and due to the past growth of my readership through various venues, I primarily just post to my website and market through Twitter as well as a monthly e-newsletter.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
It was so refreshing to learn about Smashwords when I was looking into some work by a colleague whom I respect. The traditional route of publishing (a book-length manuscript) has proven to be a tedious process which has offered very little feedback. Since I tend to produce poetry which is current-events oriented, I often have a sense of urgency about getting my subject-matter out there. As an indie author, I can set my own deadlines and publish on my own terms.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Like many independent authors, I only write when I can, which happens in-between everything else--work, parenting, school activities, housework and other obligations. Whenever possible, I love getting outside for fresh air and inspiration!
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I find many books via social media, book reviews in magazines, and/or word-of-mouth.
What is your writing process?
I tend to write my poems by hand, and then edit them while typing them up on the computer. I always print out a final version for my file cabinet, and keep computerized documents ready to go for individual submissions or to post on my website or publish as a full book-length manuscript once I have enough material.
How do you approach cover design?
Nature photos are my favorites, and I take all my own cover pictures and edit them myself.
