Interview with Samuel Laguna

When did you first start writing?
I started writing make believe stories when I was 13 years old. I created a character named Muscle Mouse and would write a little story and draw up a type of comic book.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Laughter! And good diversity life lessons learned along the way. The lead character is a street tough New Yorker who made it to the top of the IT profession inside a multinational corporation. The many combinations of foreign settings, cultures, and diverse personalities foster hilarious storytelling. I wanted to tell a story that no matter how far up the ladder you go in corporate America, one needs to always maintain a sense of humor, humility, and integrity or it will be near impossible to acquire the trust needed to be successful.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I grew up in a bar and heard many a great storyteller when I was a kid. My ability to tell stories and make people laugh is a blessing. When I got to the corporate ranks my stories helped make lots of great friends around the world. The stories in this book are funny; sometimes, naughty but they're real.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Solving problems and creating solutions. Every day I see a make-believe wall of defensive lineman trying to sack me. And every day I make a plan to break through that wall. Most times I do but sometimes I do not. The times I don't breakthrough, my inner voice says, "Get up and show them you can do it!"
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are my oxygen. Without their support, I cannot survive.
What are you working on next?
The next book will be super serious. It's a story about what will become of the USA in 100 years.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favorite authors are: Stephen Ambrose, Carlo D'Este, David Herbert Donald, and Ernest Hemmingway.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Passion drives me. I care more about EQ than IQ, especially these days. And to aspiring authors, I say, Frederick Douglass said, "Agitate, Agitate, Agitate." US Grant used to say, "Attack, Attack, Attack." And I say, "Write, Write, Write." Don't let anyone hold you back from your dreams!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am a fitness fanatic. My old man died of lung cancer when I was 16 years old. From that point in time to present, I have devoted my life to being strong, fast and athletic.
What is your writing process?
I have a story in my head and create a very structured outline. Then I conduct research to nail the facts and validate my thoughts are original. Once I produce a rough draft, I give it to a small focus group. A group I know will give me honest feedback. After the feedback is distilled and the story is polished, I employ proofreaders and then go back and forth until we have a gem. Last, I give the gem to a different focus group before publishing to make sure it is a gem and not a piece of shale : ).
