Interview with Scarlett Haven

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend a lot of time at church. I play the bass for my church and do a lot of other things to help out. I also enjoy reading.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It was a book about a 15 year old girl. (I was 14 at the time). And she had a famous older sister and she thought she would never measure up to her. It was a book about self discovery. And, of course, there was a cute boy.
What is your writing process?
I get an idea, build the main character and her family, then I write. No plotting. Most of the time I know how the story will end, but sometimes I don't. It's fun that way :)
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I've been reading since I was young enough to read. I don't remember the first book, but I do remember the first "romance" book I ever read. I was in the 8th grade and the librarian recommended "The Notebook" to me. I fell in love with the story and I guess that's when I truly fell in love with reading.
How do you approach cover design?
I LOVE designing graphics. Web graphics. Book covers. Anything that I can. So I do my own covers at this point.
What do you read for pleasure?
Young adult usually always, because YA is clean. Everything I read MUST have a romance. I love mystery, contemporary, paranormal, dystopian... pretty much anything.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My iPad. I either read on my Kindle app or my iBooks app.
When did you first start writing?
The second grade. That was when I started writing. Of course, back then, I would write fantasy stuff. Stuff where I would meet Justin Timberlake and we would fall instantly in love... Each of my friends I would write dating the other members. I wish I still had those stories, LOL.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I don't like being told what to do. I like writing what I want, when I want. I like having freedom. So I suppose that's why I chose to go the indie route. I never even tried to get a publisher.
Who are your favorite authors?
Quinn Loftis, Kiera Cass, Lila Felix, Shelly Crane, CC Hunter, CJ Daughtry and Katrina Abbott. (To name a few).
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in North East Arkansas. Oddly enough, I never really fit in there. I don't have a southern accent, despite everybody in the town (my family included) having southern accents. I loved to read. Maybe that's what really molded me into the person I am.
